I drank from my cup before myself,
And said, “O soul, what is our aim?
A life of doubt and a death of doubt—
Then let us drown doubt in wine.”
Our hopes flashed brightly, then vanished,
Like a mirage that left us only thirst.
Never mind: life is nothing but
A stage whose beginning is its end.
When the wind blows from the south,
My sorrow blows from the north.
Every wind eventually falls still,
Except sorrow, which weariness stirs.
My heart groans for a beloved,
Yet no beloved exists but imagination.
O soul, be patient through afflictions:
Everything must pass away.
I took myself to a physician
And said, “Physician, what is the cure?”
He set about treating my body's sickness,
Supposing the illness lay in its humors.
I said, “My friend, my oil has run dry;
You test the lamp in vain.
When the light has died within the radiant lamp,
What use, do you think, can the glass be?”
I journeyed on, my heart in tumult;
We followed a passion that had passed through the dust storm.
My eye and I flew on with longing,
Racing ahead without distress,
While the barefoot heart walked slowly
Over shards of glass.
I searched for my heart but could not find it:
Had it died, or lost its way in the wilds?
I returned alone toward humankind,
Driven by reason's scourging lash.
I cried, “O people, my heart has died,
Still an infant, still in swaddling clothes.
Will you accept me without a heart?”
They said, “Has madness touched you?”
I look upon the earth—how many hearts
Have been trampled among us on the road!
My Lord, how numerous the victims:
They died in the crush along the ways.
All humankind is a majestic procession
Moving through the funeral of hearts.
They walk with the grave inside their breasts,
And blood runs from their wounds.
No others like them pay any price;
The dead man's blood-money lies in pockets.
O soul, have mercy—where shall we go?
Nothing lies before me but graves.
Reason has imposed a wretched life upon you,
Burdening you with what you cannot bear.
Then let us leave reason wherever it pleases,
For reason possesses no feeling.
Would you abandon humankind entirely,
And burn the bridges after leaving them?”
My soul cried out to me and said,
“What have I to do with people and their crowds?”
“You are right, O soul; then follow me,
For no dwelling can compare with the forest.
O forest, we have come to you to bare ourselves—
My soul and I, with nothing forbidden.
Let the bough proclaim what it sees
Of us, if it can speak well.”
My soul said to me, “Do you know
What the trees are saying in their rustling?
That branch is weeping for birds
Whose gentle singing once enraptured it.
They flew away and will not return until
Its clustered grove grows green again.
If only these trees could walk,
They would go where autumn never comes.”
“O soul, that rustling is a riddle
Understood by the sun and clouds.
That is no complaint, but an intimate whisper
From the earth's depths within the soil:
The whisper of roots that yearn
For more than watering and drink,
Rocked whenever they grow still
By memories of suns that never set.
How many a tree reveals no more
Than a little of its great abundance:
Its boughs and branches are one part,
Visible, yet paltry,
While beneath the surface of the earth are roots,
Hidden, their mass immense.
Within them lies the branches' life, although
Among humankind they are deemed of little worth.
If a person gazed deeply at creation,
They would behold what eyes cannot see.
Around us lies an unseen world
That the spirit apprehends in stillness.
How many sighted people do not see, while one blind
Can see and know what is to be.
Woe to those who perceive nothing
Unless they open their eyelids.”
