إِذا قالَ غاوٍ مِن مَعَدٍّ قَصيدَةً
بِها جَرَبٌ حَلَّت عَلَيَّ حُمولُها
When an errant person from Ma’ad recites a poem,
With which misfortunes rain down upon me,
أَيُترَكُ قَوّالُ الخَنا وَيَنالُني
عَوايِرُ قَولٍ لَستُ مِمَّن يَقولُها
Should the slanderous liar be left alone,
And the repugnant words reach me, though I did not utter them?
