قضى عجباً من حاله المتعجب

يجد اشتعالاً رأسه وهو يلعب

The astonished expressed astonishment at his state of astonishment

He finds his head aflame while he plays

أيبغي التصابي بعدما ابيض فوده

فيا للنهى للشيخ بالدف يضرب

Does he want to be struck again after his cheeks have whitened?

So it is fitting for the elder to be struck with a tambourine!

ألم يأن ان يقني الحياء مؤنب

بلى آن أن يقني الحياء مؤنب

Has not the time come for modesty to be a scolder?

Yes, the time has come for modesty to be a scolder

ومن لم يزع شيب المفارق غيه

فلائمه باللوم أحرى وأنسب

And whoever does not remove the white hair of separation is mad

Blaming him is more fitting and appropriate

أبن لي على ماذا حصلت من الدنا

فقد ذقت منها ما يمر ويعذب

Tell me what you have gained from the world

For you have tasted from it what is bitter and painful

أكان سوى طيف ملم وعارض

جهام وبرق مخلف النوء خلب

Was it anything but an illusion that disappeared,

Clouds, lightning after rain has passed

مني أنت في العمياء غاد ورائح

تصعد في بهمائها وتصوب

You are lost in blindness going and coming back

Rising up in its darkness and descending

تبارز بالعصيان من هو قادر

عليك وفي آلائه تتقلب

Challenging in disobedience the One able over you

While you turn about in His signs

أحدثت أن المرء في الأرض معجز

لقد كذبتك النفس والنفس تكذب

You thought man on earth was incapable

Your soul has lied to you and the soul lies

لقد لذك التسويف في مازق على

شفا حفرة سرعان ما تتصوب

Procrastination has pleased you in a strait

On the edge of a pit, soon to be erected

لعمري المنايا إنها لقريبة

على أنها من ساحة الشيب أقرب

By my life, death is indeed near

Though from the field of old age it is nearer

وان مراس الموت لا در دره

وإن كان صعباً فالذي بعد أصعب

And the scales of death clank unnoticed

And if it is hard, what comes after is harder

تقلص ظلم العمر إلا صبابة

الا فانتهبها قبل ما أنت تنهب

Seize the injustice of time before it shrinks

Except plunder it before you are plundered

وبادر فإن الوقت ضاق على الونا

وصم فسكيت الرهان المذبذب

Take the initiative, for time is too short for caprice

Bet seriously, not wavering with the stake

وخذ للقاء اللَه ما اسطعت أهبة

فإن لقاء اللَه ما عنه مهرب

And take for meeting God whatever preparations you can

For there is no fleeing the meeting with God

وإن ضقت ذرعاً من تعاظم ما مضى

فلا تنس عفو اللَه فالعفو أرحب

And if you are distressed by the immensity of what has passed

Do not forget God’s pardon, for pardon is vastest

ولذ بجناب الفاتح الخاتم الذي

به يطمئن الخائف المترقب

Take pleasure in the side of the Opener, the Sealer

In whom the apprehensive hopeful takes comfort

هو العاقب الماحي الذي بزغت به

على الكون شمس نورها ليس يغرب

He is the Requiter, the Effacer in whom

The sun of His light rose over the universe, never to set

له الشرف الوضاح والرتبة التي

تسنمها لم يدن منها مقرب

To Him belong manifest brilliance and the rank

Which no intimate angel reached as He ascended

نحل له الرسل الكرام حباهم

وان ذكروا فهو العذيق المرجب

The noble messengers singled Him out with love

And if they mention Him, He is the precious, the splendid

إذا الخطب أبدى ناجذيه فناده

تجد خير جار في الملمات يندب

If events speak clearly, call on Him

You will find the best neighbor in adversities lamenting

وإن لدغتك الموبقات فداوها

به فهو ترياق السموم المجرب

And if calamities sting you, cure them through Him

For He is the tried antidote to poisons

به تكشف الغما به يقزع الأذى

به الداء يستشفي به الصدع يرأب

Through Him worries are uncovered, harm is repelled

By Him, illness is cured, cracks are repaired

إليك رسول اللَه قد جاء ضارعاً

أخو عثرة يرجو الأقالة مذنب

To you, Messenger of God, he has come imploring

A brother of stumbling, hoping for lenience, a sinner

فبابك باب اللَه ما عنه مذهب

وطالبه من غير بابك يحجب

For your door is God’s door, no other path leads away

And one who seeks it other than your door is barred

فليس بنا من منحة بتفضل

من اللَه إلا عن مساعيك تجلب

We have no bounty from the bestowal of God

Except through your efforts it is obtained

ولا مسنا من محنة أو تمسنا

بكسب يد إلا بيمنك تذهب

No adversity has touched us, no fortune has favored us

Except by your right hand it is removed

أغثني تداركني أجرني فإنني

لفى ان تراخى عنه لطفك يعطب

Help me, save me, favor me, for if

Your kindness relaxes from me, I am undone

غريق ذنوب خانه الحول فاغتدى

بملتطم الأمواج يطفو ويرسب

A drowner in sins, fortune betrayed me so it transgressed

Battered by the surging waves, floating and sinking

ذنوب تحيل العذر فالخوف غالب

ولكن رجائي في جنابك أغلب

Sins that invalidate excuses, so fear prevails

But my hope in You prevails over it

وأبعد شيء ان يضيق برحبها

شفاعتك العظمى بنا فهي أرحب

The furthest thing is for Your magnificent intercession through us

To narrow, for it is the most expansive

إذا قمت موعود المقام فإننا

على ثقة ان ليس منا مخيب

When You stand at the promised station, we

Are confident that we will not be deprived

ألم يرضك الرحمن في سورة الضحى

وحاشاك أن ترضي وفينا معذب

Has not the All-Merciful been pleased with you in Surat Ad-Duha

And it is far from You to be pleased while we suffer

أترضى مع الجاه الوجيه ضياعنا

ونحن إلى أعتاب بابك ننسب

Are You pleased with great status while we are lost

Though to the threshold of Your door we trace our lineage?

أترضى مع العرض العريض بأن ترى

مقامك محموداً ونحن نعذب

Are You pleased with abundant honor while You see

Your praised standing while we suffer?

أتخذل يا حامي الذمار عصابة

بهديك دانت ما لها عنه مذهب

Do You let down, O Protector of the refuge, a party

Who by Your guidance professed no other doctrine?

دعوت فلبيناك سمعاً وطاعة

وحاشاك أن ندعوك ثم تخيب

We called You, so we responded obediently

It is far from You that we call then You disappoint

وأن أك قد أدللت فالعذر واضح

إذا كثر الإحسان ساء التأدب

That I have been emboldened, the excuse is clear

If favor increases, courtesy decreases

وان لسان المدح فيك لقاصر

وإن أسهب المداح فيك وأطنبوا

And tongues fall short in praising You

And if praisers speak at length in praising You

ألست فريد الكون فضلاً فمن لنا

بنظم فريد الحسن فيك يرتب

Are You not peerless in favor? So who do we have

To compose unmatched beauty in praising You?

وماذا عسى مثلي يشيد بذكر من

محامده في الذكر تتلى وتكتب

What can the likes of me construct in mentioning one whose

Praises in mention are recited and recorded?

ولكن خمولي حثني أن يكون لي

بمدحك قدح في النباهة يضرب

But my inadequacy drove me to have in praising You

A strike in glory that is noted

عليك صلاة اللَه تترى مسلماً

مع الآل والأصحاب ما انهل صيب

Upon you, may God send blessings, looking upon a Muslim

Together with family and companions whenever a cloud rains

صلاة توازي قدر ذاتك رفعة

بتبليغها عني إلى اللَه أرغب

Blessings matching Your essence’s loftiness

In delivering them to God, I most hope
