ما آن يا ترف المراقد

عطف على من بات ساهد

O bed of tranquility, what are you?

Leaning over one who spent the night awake

ما صعد الأنفاس لا

لا خلته بالنفس صاعد

No breath ascended except

After it left with the ascending soul

سئم الحميم حنينه

ورثت لحالته الأباعد

The intimate grew weary of yearning

And inherited his state of distances

أمسى أسير لحاظك اللائي

احتوين علي المكابد

He became prisoner of your cheek's radiance

Which contained my suffering

اللَه من سحر أرا

نا ثائراً في زي رائد

Oh God, from the magic I saw

It made me defiant in the guise of a pioneer

لستن أجفان الجآ

ذر غير أشطان المصائد

Your eyelids are naught

But snares of traps

وأرى سليم شراككن

هو السليم من الشدائد

And I see your braids' loop

As the safe one from afflictions

فأخلص بلبك واتعظ

من كيدهن بما أكابد

So be sincere with your heart and take heed

From their guile with what I suffer

أو فاتخذ لك مهجة

إن فارقت يوماً تعاود

Or take for yourself a love

If one day you are separated, you will return

من حاجبي من ناظر

قد صار للألباب قائد

Of my eyebrows and of my glance

It has become for minds a guide

ومساعدي وعليه كل

صاح قد عدم المساعد

And my supporter, and in it every

Passionate crier that lacked support

كم مدلهم حالك الأر

جا كباطن ذي الحقائد

How long did their condition make the earth

Like an inner foe full of malice?

ليل كأن نجومه

مقل شكت أثر المراود

A night whose stars

Were like tears that told of parting's trace

لم يقض لي بالنوم حتى

ان جعلت الصبح شاهد

It did not allow me to sleep until

It made the dawn a witness

حتام تسهرني أبا

طيل المنى والحظ راقد

Surely you keep me up through the night

For long with wishes while fortune sleeps

وإلام أستثني المخا

وف بالرجا والدهر واجد

And why should I exclude the trusted one

With hope, fortune, and finding?

إني امرؤ كاد الزما

ن بترك تدبير المكايد

I am a man whom time almost

Made neglect to plan schemes

وبلوته فرأيت ني

ل القصد في ترك المقاصد

And I tested it, so I saw guiding

Purpose in leaving aims

فقعدت عن زجر القلا

ص وكنت قبلا غير قاعد

So I refrained from rebuking rivals and I was

Before that, not refraining

ووقفت بعد مواقف

المحسود في أثواب حاسد

And I stood after stands

Of the envied in robes of an envier

والدهر إن تستذك خا

مد عرفه تستور صالد

And time - if you reconsider its recklessness -

You will find a violent coated one

كعلا الفتى العرضي من

يبغيه يستهوي عطارد

Like the young man of prestige whom

He wants, he lures Mercury

ذاك الكريم لدى الكرا

م بل الشديد على الشدائد

That generous one with the generous

Rather, the firm one against afflictions

ذاك الذي جعل الندى

وقفاً على سبل المحام

The one who made the dew

A donation on the roads of the Hima

وإلى محاسن شعره

قد سلم الحسن المقالد

And to the beautiful qualities of his poetry

The excellent ones submitted the reins

أعني بذاك محمداً

سر الجهابذة الأماجد

I mean by that Muhammad

The secret of the great glorious ones

من شردوا الجدوى كما

ردوا من الفضل الشوارد

Who dispersed fruitlessness as

They repelled the outstanding merits

الذائدون عن العلا

والمرء عما حاز ذائد

Repelling from the banner

And man from what he gained, repelling

بيت لقد فاقت قوا

عده فأثرى كل قاعد

A house - indeed its foundations

Surpassed, so it enriched every dweller
