1. أيشعر هذا البرق أي المباسم

    سرى فتذكرنا بأي المعالم

    What does this lightning feel, and which smiles

    Spread, reminding us of which landmarks?

  2. وكم دونها من سبسب دون طيه

    سرى دونه زجر القلاص الرواسم

    And how many pleats beneath it without folding

    Spread, the pleats of the robe below rustling.

  3. بريق الفضا هلا درى كيف حالنا

    على البعد أخدان لنا بالعواصم

    Does the sparkle of space know how we are

    From afar, taking towns as our bosoms?

  4. أأسألهم ما ذا تطيق قلوبهم

    صدعت إذن بالظلم قلب المراحم

    Shall I ask them what their hearts can bear?

    My heart broke from injustice, being merciful.

  5. سقى اللَه أرضاً خيموا بفنائها

    وباكرها صوب الحيا المتراكم

    May God water a land they camped in its courtyard,

    And its morning towards accumulated serpents.

  6. ولا زال طفل النبت في مهد تربها

    يدر عليه من دموع الغمايم

    And the child of the plants is still in the cradle of its soil,

    Its tears of clouds pouring upon it.

  7. ولو سقيت أمثالها قبلها دما

    لقلت سقاها من دموعي السواجم

    Had I watered the likes of it with blood before,

    I would have said I watered it with my pouring tears.

  8. معاهد كان اللهو فيها مساعدي

    على وفق قصدي والزمان مسالمي

    Covenants it was, playfulness aiding me,

    According to my purpose, and time is peaceful with me.

  9. وأيامنا بالأجرع الفرد هل لنا

    سبيل إلى عهد الصبا المتقادم

    And our days with aloofness, is there for us

    A way to the era of perished youth?

  10. ليالي لا أقداح ترضى مدارةً

    علينا سوى أحداق ظبي ملائم

    Nights no cups satisfy us but gazelles'

    Eyes, and no breeze but from the soft palms.

  11. ولا الراح إلا من رضاب مبرد

    ولا الورد إلا من خدود نواعم

    Ask the anklets how we lived pampered

    In a time of tenderness wearing delicate pearls.

  12. وسل أثلات الجزع تخبرك أننا

    نعمنا بعيش في ذراهن ناعم

    The meadow adorned with dewy pastures,

    Wearing the necklaces of morning dew.

  13. إذ الروض مخضل الربا ذو غضارة

    تقلد من قطر الندى بتمائم

    And in the gowns of branches, light as if

    It is the palms playing in veils.

  14. وفي حلل الأغصان نور كأنه

    مجامر ند في حجور الكمائم

    Some hands clasping others in the youth’s hand,

    Like the smile of beaming lips on smiling lips.

  15. يصافح بعض بعضه بيد الصبا

    كباسم ثغر راشف ثغر باسم

    Beauty covered in Msaw dress,

    And weddings replaced with misfortunes.

  16. محاسن غطتها مساو من النوى

    وأعراس لهو بدلت بمآثم

    Ask the sand grouses how many times with the strayed ones’ hands,

    We mended the camel litters’ torn darkness.

  17. سل اليعملات البزل كم فتقت بنا

    بأيدي السرى من رتق أغبر قاتم

    And how many times their toes tapped the high-bred camel,

    Lost, crowned with clouds.

  18. وكم شدخت أخفافها هام سامد

    من الشم تيها توجت بالغمائم

    And when the strayed ones went west with determination,

    Yearning's memory for meeting Ibn Qassim sharpened it.

  19. وكنا إذا فل السرى غرب عزمنا

    تشحذه ذكرى لقاء ابن قاسم

    The banner of virtue not defended,

    And the protector of glory’s houses not intruded upon.

  20. مقل لواء الفضل غير مدافع

    وحامي ذمار المجد غير مزاحم

    A garden of virtue whose light does not rise,

    And a sea of waves of wisdom churning.

  21. حديقة فضل لا يصوح نورها

    وبحر بأمواج الذكا متلاطم

    The stars were preoccupied with its meanings and followed them,

    So they became oscillating between descending and rising.

  22. عنت لمعانيه الكواكب واقتدت

    بها فغدت ما بين هاد وراجم

    Had I not been told of him, I would have bowed down in shyness,

    Manners bowed down before him completely muzzled.

  23. ولولا مقال جاءني عنه أطرقت

    حياءً له الآداب أطراق واجم

    It broke the intestines of poetry, overwhelmed,

    The rhymes turned back, still wearing their turbans.

  24. وقطع أمعاء القريض لهوله

    ورد القوافي وهي سود العمائم

    My dear imam, I fear you would see

    With the eyes of meanings an exposed blemish.

  25. إمام العلى اني أحاشيك أن ترى

    بعين المعاني عرضة للوائم

    I claimed I was a thief, not a poet.

    You were right in the meaning of a charming, not rhyming sorcerer.

  26. زعمت باني سارق غير شاعر

    صدقت بمعنى ساحر غير ناظم

    Those before have said it and were silenced

    By the hands of blaming - God forbid you, deaf to the obstinate.

  27. لقد قالها من قبل قوم فألقموا

    بأيدي الهجا حاشاك صم الصلادم

    They saw the likes of what you witnessed of Ahmad’s wonders,

    With the Arabian initiative and the nature of a fighter.

  28. رأو مثل ما عاينت إبداع أحمد

    ببادرة الطائي وطبع كشاجم

    Your affection, some denial is inevitable, I must come

    With the poetry of the beloved who saw Jud’s generosity.

  29. حنانيك بعض النفي لا بدع ان أتي

    بشعر حبيب من رأى جود حاتم

    And if the dew of the son of swords in a meadow,

    Would he deny in it the scent of doves?

  30. وان ندى نجل الحسام لروضة

    أينكر فيها طيب سجع الحمائم

    So avoid them, chaste thoughts that

    The hand of longing moves from certitude's affection safely.

  31. فدونكها أبكار فكر تزجها

    يد الشوق عن ود من الريب سالم

    With structure not ruined by any envious one,

    Nor any destroying hand able to harm it.

  32. مشيدة البنيان لا يسترثها

    حسود ولا يقوى بها كف هادم
