، :
She began to complain of my reproach, so I said:
May I never reproach again after this,
nor may my words make a dear friend’s eye weep;
for after this blame, I have repented.
:
She said, “You have been my very eye since we fell in love.”
I said, “The eye weeps”—then it overflowed.
As though in sorrow’s buckets I were a tear
flowing from her eye when I wept.
She went beyond all bounds in beauty, and left me
at dawn, when the road walked on ... though I did not.
Like a goblet in which wine reveals itself,
she has a waist that shows through when I look.
And, wonder of wonders, she turns translucent when it fills her,
and, wonder of wonders, she turns translucent when I drink.
