Herds of betrayal...and the streets are asleep
And the dawn a sea...and the city adrift
A child splits open a lifetime towards his salvation
He walks wounded, and treachery lurks
His steps are the candle of the road, lighting it
And the sound of prayer in the chest of a fasting mother
Return my love and steal my awakening
Settle the slumber of life, my destructive palm
Abandon your innocence that you have adorned
And rise for your celebration, for martyrdom is coming
Herds of crows and you alone crying out
You called when you called out to unresponsive Arabs
No sound but what distress has begotten
Our capitals have fallen and you have become the capital
So read to us what blood can be read
This Arabism is delusional with reading
The swords of poetry slipped out quietly while
No comprehending swords were drawn for dignity
We are nothing but a nation in its silence
The prayer of victory broke, fearing the blamer
This is our country, no matter how high
The shepherds' voices rise and the sublime bless it
This is our sky, it never rained
Except for men, and manhood decisive
Forgive me little one, for reciting you a verse
Poetry is a sin and the poem guilty
The invaders' fire, its flames from our oil
The flesh prey, and Arabism the devourer
You who have darkened the injustice within us
How many oppressors have questioned the oppressed?
In the tents of life is there room for a dreamer
To say long live the dreaming life?
The killers frowned while your age laughed
So smile, O Jerusalem, your Angel sullen
No scent but what the breeze carries
And the scent of death roams fragrant
Your ribs have ripened, did you cry “Wait!”
Or were the fires gently peaceful?
This is God's friend in the silence of blazes
He was the beginning, then you were the end
