O Ahwaz—how many calamities the deserted ruins have mourned,
until the one who mourned you lifted the veil from my grief!

and Azad went into your sanctuary, recounting:
He fulfilled the fire’s promises to the full measure of its blaze,
while the tongue of Ḍād—the Arabic language—broke faith with your soil.

They severed Arabness crosswise, when
the arm fell; the heart within you held fast.

And Dujayl journeyed by night through the lands, crying out:
Arise, that battles may resurrect us anew!
