Messenger of love, convey my greetings to Selma,
Messenger of passion, convey my greetings to Salma,
And be gentle with her smiling, tender mouth.
And partake of the wine from her smiling, deep-red lips,
Confide in her love, hoping that mercy
And whisper to her love, that perhaps in the unseen lies a mercy
Will save this heart from endless worries.
To rescue this heart before it perishes from sorrow.
And pour out the longing of an enamored one,
And pour out the complaint of a yearning, captive soul,
Whose burning liver is squeezed with sorrow.
Possessing a burning core that constricts with overwhelming grief.
So much passion aches under this heart,
For how much searing passion lies beneath this heart,
And so many ribs lie between this body and despair.
And within this body, how many ribs are wounded.
I stay up at night, speaking to a star, as if
I spend the night whispering to the stars, as though
My beloved has become hidden in the darkness.
The beloved of my heart has become hidden there.
My country, my country, how sweet is love, and how
My land, my land, how sweet is passion, and yet how
Bitter are the cups of love mixed with poison.
Bitter are the cups of love when mingled with poison.
My country, if only you would show me some kindness,
My land, will you not turn to me with a glance of kindness?
Your tenderness - what is this harshness, this blame?
I beg your tenderness; what is this detachment? It is neither solace nor sin.
Since I opened my teary eyes, I have seen
And since the tears forced open my eyes, they have beheld
Only your love, so I have no shame or guilt.
Your love alone; thus upon me lies no shame nor blame.
By God, what youthful vigor you have burdened me with -
By God, what a burden of longing you have placed upon me—
If it were in Rizwa, it would demolish it completely.
Had it been placed upon Mount Radwa, it would have razed it to the ground.
