أَرَى العَفْوَ عَنْ عُلْيَا قُريشٍ وَسِيلَةً

إلى اللهِ في اليومِ العَبُوسِ القُمَاطِرِ

I see forgiving Aliya of Quraish as a means

To God on the gloomy, rainy day.

ولَسْتُ أَرَى قَتْلِي فَتىً ذا قَرَابَةٍ

لَهُ نَسَبٌ في حَيِّ كَعْبٍ وعَامرِ

And I do not see killing a young man of kinship

Who has lineage in Kaeb and Aamer clans.

بَلِ الْعَفْوَ عَنْهُ بَعْدَمَا خابَ قَدْحُهُ

وزَلّتْ به إِحْدَى الجُدودِ العَواثِرِ

Rather, forgiving him after his spear failed

And one of the stumbling elders stumbled him.

وكانَ أبوهُ يَوْمَ صِفّينَ مُحْنَقاً

عَلَيْنا فَأَرْدَتْهُ رِمَاحُ يُحابِرِ

And his father was furious at us during Siffin,

So our thrusting spears wanted him.
