1. Is it right that what is owed to the ruler

is given him, while he withholds what is asked of him?

  2. When I have put the sands between myself and him,

and a barren plain stretches wide amid Tabrin—

  3. a tract of al-Adma where sandgrouse find no rest,

and the winds tire short of it, then break apart—

  4. then do as you will, O house of Marwan: seek

my downfall, for whoever seeks it has no hope of success.

  5. And I am not like the ass that stays with its owners,

tethered, grazing in the very midst of humiliation.

  6. And were it not that God's Messenger was one of you,

it would be clear who accepts fair treatment and is content.
