1. I traveled by night through a trackless waste, seeing no one,

    until it was time for a late-night rest for whoever had halted.

  2. I lay down on my side and said, "God watches over me."

    Whatever eye may sleep and neglect you, He is never heedless.

  3. My sword lay against my skin, between me and my garment;

    I feared misfortunes; I was not one to rely on others.

  4. I slept only a little, and that sleep was uneasy,

    until I felt a weight upon my body.

  5. A terror among night's terrors attacked me by night,

    openly seeking my life, with no stealth.

  6. I swung a slashing blow at him while the night concealed him,

    save that I could hear him and his noise; then he fell back.

  7. I lit my fire, not knowing whether a maned beast

    coming at the shouter had felt my sword's bite, or a man.

  8. When God turned the harm of his charge away from me,

    I slept, neither immobilized by terror nor bewildered.

  9. Do you not see the dwelling desolate, with no companion there

    except wild beasts, its people having departed by evening?

  10. Between al-Munifah, where its floodwaters rush,

    and Fardah, some of its wild beasts rest at noon.

  11. Whoever takes part in war burns in it and stokes its flames;

    you see him pale and fearful from what it has clothed him in.

  12. Take this! For combat, when there is a clash

    of men's hands, is waged with blows that shear through helmets.
