You left while tears flowed
And my heart depressed with passion for you
My body grew frail from your estrangement
Why not return or come back?
If you decided to travel
Tell me so I can explain what's inside me
Perhaps you would pity a martyr of longing
And I know your answer
How long do I hope for reunion with you
Soon or till Judgement Day?
And I inform you that I am confused
My heart is sad, O friends!
If we shall meet soon
Or else I am done with blaming
Don't you know I suffer torment of passion for you
And so does my constitution?
But they did not stop or show mercy to my patience
Nor hearkened nor heard my righteous words
They insisted on travelling, leaving me
Tossing my face in the sand
And shedding tears of longing for them
As floods stream from clouds
I stay up sighing with yearning
And my heart inflamed with their intent
To them, from them, and for them
I have none but them to seek
I ask about them in every land
Till youth left my body
And when I saw old age arrive
I retreated from one who has kin
And decided to insult every spiteful one
And praise to the beneficent and sensible
I praise every waking hour
The beneficent and sensible
Whoever sought gifts from a miser
Is like one seeking drink from a mirage
Whoever sought gifts from a generous one
Is like one who lowered his bucket in a well
So do not ask a miser for gifts
And avoid him and abstain from addressing him
Ask the generous ones, do not ask the stingy
Whose status is like that of dogs
I wonder at who seeks plenty from a miser
I see you sought shade from ruins
What stingy tribe gained honour
From eras, but in torment?
When asked, the miser retorts
Do you ask the impossible?
The miser stays saddened
For the world, till Judgement Day
Finding difficulty when a guest visits him one day
And enters his narrowness from every door
And if someone from mankind catches sight of him
He hides from seeing him with a veil
And says, I reckon he intended provision
Covering his face like a masked fool
So he avoids him in some cliffs
Curses upon the miser and his patron
And he who strove for reward
You left while tears flowed
