  1. مُذْ مدةٍ ما جاءنا

    منكم خطوطٌ أو خبرْ

    For a long time now,

    we've had no word from you,

  2. أَمْ كيف لا يأْتى إلي

    نا عنكم خبر يَسُرّْ

    no news or letters.

    How is it that no cheerful report

  3. أم عافكم عنا كما

    قد عافنا عنكم كِبرْ

    reaches us about you?

    Or have you given up on us

  4. أَنسيتُمُ عهداً قديم

    ا أمْ بَدَا منكمْ نظَرْ

    as we have grown indifferent to you?

    Have you forgotten an old bond,

  5. أمْ غيَّر الودَّ النوى

    أمْ رَبعٌ ودى قد دثَرْ

    or did some different view occur to you?

    Has affection changed its intent,

  6. أَمْ مسَّكُمْ منا صفاءٌ

    أمْ حادثٌ مِنَّا ظَهرْ

    or has a loved one wrapped himself up and turned away?

    Did some flaw in us appear,

  7. أَمْ قد بَدا مِنّا مَقَا

    لٌ في عواقبه ضَررْ

    or did a fault surface among us,

    with harmful consequences in the future?

  8. أمْ دهركم ألهَاكُمُ

    أَمْ قلبكم عنّا نَفر

    Or has fate distracted you,

    or has your heart turned from us?

  9. ولقدْ سمعت بِأَنكم

    جِئتم إلى العلمَ الأَبرُّ

    Yet I have heard that you

    have come into valuable knowledge -

  10. ماذَا يضيركُمْ إذا

    عاملتموُني بالخبَرْ

    so what harm if you

    keep me informed?

  11. ما دارَ في ضمير الفؤادِ

    محبكم أو ما خَطَرْ

    What has passed through the heart's thoughts,

    of love or ideas, about you?

  12. في بالِكم أنِّى أنا

    الخِلُّ الوفيُّ وما عَدَرْ

    What has come into your mind about me -

    that I am a dear friend, flawless and pure?

  13. فبآى مَا أعرضْتمُ

    عنّي فغالتنى الفكرْ

    So why have you turned

    away from me, and worried my thoughts?

  14. منحٌ قريبٌ منكمُ

    لو واحدٌ منكم أَمَرْ

    A visit soon from you

    would be a boon, if one of you decided

  15. بزيارةٍ لمحبكمْ

    كَىْ ما يكون له قَدَرْ

    to visit your loving friend,

    so he would have worth.

  16. لكن بحمدِ اللَّهِ أن

    ى لا تحركنى له قُدَرْ

    But praise God that no power

    stirs me to destiny.

  17. لا يَنْجَلى وُدِّي عن المحب

    وبِ واصلَ أَمْ هَجَرْ

    Affection for a friend does not disappear,

    whether he draws near or turns away.

  18. لكننّي لابدَّ لي

    من أن أعاتبَ من نفَرْ

    But still I must reproach

    the one who shunned me,

  19. كَىْ تَنطفى الأفكارُ

    عن قلبي لكى ما يَسْتِقرّْ

    so thoughts may settle

    and calm my heart.
