1. تعلّمْ العلمَ حقّاً يا فتَى عمرِ

    ولا تدَع فصله ما دمْتَ في الصغرِ

    Learn knowledge truly, O youth of my life

    And do not neglect its chapter as long as you are young

  2. فالعلم سهلٌ إذا ما كنتَ في صِغَرِ

    وغيرُ سَهْلٍ إذا ما كنت في الكِبَرِ

    For knowledge is easy when you are young

    And not easy when you are old

  3. والعِلْم أثبتُ للفتيانِ مَنفعةً

    قد كان تعليمُهم كالنقش في الحجرِ

    Knowledge is the most beneficial thing for youth

    Teaching them was like engraving on stone

  4. وإنّ في العلم آداباً وتذكرةً

    للغافلين وتذكيراً لِمدّكِرِ

    Indeed, knowledge has morals and a reminder

    For the heedless, and a reminder for the mindful

  5. وعبرةً وعظاتٍ ثم منفعةً

    للسائلين وأفكاراً لمعتبِرِ

    And lessons and advice, then benefit

    For the questioners, and ideas for the one who reflects

  6. فصاحبُ الجَهل موضوعٌ ولا عَجَبٌ

    وصاحب العِلم عند الخلق ذُو قَدَرِ

    So the ignorant person is neglected, and no wonder

    While the knowledgeable person is honored among people

  7. ينالُ منزلةَ الأحرارِ عبدُهمُ

    بالعلمِ والحرُّ يغدُو أشرفَ القَدرِ

    The servant gains the status of the noble

    Through knowledge, and the free man becomes the best of ranks

  8. إنى نصحتكَ فاسْتمسِكْ بنصحِ فتَى

    مُشَافِق مُشْفِق صافٍ مِن الكَدَرِ

    I have advised you, so hold on to the advice of a youth

    Who is sympathetic, worried, pure from turbidity

  9. فلا تجالسْ أُهيلَ السوء يا وَلَدى

    وفرَّ عنهم وكن مِنهم عَلَى حَذَرِ

    So do not sit with the ignorant evil ones, my boy

    And flee from them and beware of them

  10. ولا تجَالسْ كثيرَ الضحكِ ذَا رِيَبٍ

    ولا تُجَالسْ كثيرَ القولِ ذَا هَدَرِ

    And do not sit with one who laughs much, doubtable

    And do not sit with one whose talk is noisy

  11. وَلا تُصاحب أخَا كذِبٍ وكنْ فطِناً

    في الفِعل والقول والأخبار والأثرِ

    And do not accompany a lying brother, and be smart

    In action, words, news and influence

  12. ودَع مجالسةَ المغتابِ مُجتهداً

    وكنْ حليما جَليس العالمٍ الحذرِ

    And leave sitting with the slanderer, striving

    And be forbearing, sitting with the worldly wise and cautious

  13. فإن مجلس أَهل العلم مرتبةٌ

    ومجلسَ السوءِ عِندي أعظم الضررِ

    For the gathering of people of knowledge is a rank

    And the gathering of evil in my view is the greatest harm

  14. إنّي أمينٌ صَفِيٌّ الودِّ ذُو مِقَةٍ

    مُعلمٌ لك هادٍ فاستمع خبَرِى

    I am a trustee, pure in affection, dignified

    A teacher for you, guiding - so listen to my news

  15. أخُصُّ بالنصح محمودَ اللقاء لنا

    أعنى بذاكَ سليماناً فتَى عِبرِ

    I specialize in advice - Mahmoud is praised when we meet

    I mean by that Suleiman, the boy with lessons

  16. كنْ في المساجدِ ذا صمتٍ وذَا فكرٍ

    مرتِّلَ الذكرِ والآيات والسورِ

    Be in the mosques, silent and contemplative

    Reciting the remembrance, verses and chapters

  17. وبرَّ يا سيِّدى بالوالدين وكنْ

    محافظاً لهمَا في مدة العُمُرِ

    And be dutiful, my master, to the parents, and be

    Protective of them for the duration of life

  18. ورَاعِ حقهما في كلِّ منزلةٍ

    فإنّ برَّهما من أطيبِ السَّيَرِ

    And observe their rights in every position

    For being dutiful to them is the best conduct

  19. إيَّاكَ والكبرَ لا تسلك لهُ طرُفاً

    إنَّ ابن آدم مخلوقٌ مِن المَدَرِ

    Beware of arrogance, do not take any path to it

    The son of Adam is created from mud

  20. لا تُشغِل القلبَ بالدنيا وزُخرفها

    فإنَّ طالبَها مِنها عَلى خطّرِ

    Do not busy the heart with the world and its ornaments

    For its seeker is at great risk from it

  21. هي الغَرُور فلا يَغْرُرك ظاهرُها

    وليس يختارُها إلا ذُوو غررِ

    It is alluring, so do not be deceived by its exterior

    And none choose it except the very deluded

  22. واصرفْ هُمومَك للأخرى وكُنْ حذِراً

    تَلْق السرورَ بجناتٍ على سُررِ

    And direct your worries to the hereafter, and be cautious

    You will meet happiness in gardens, on couches

  23. واقْفُ المعلمَ فيما قال من أَدبٍ

    واجعلْ محلّته في أرفعِ القدَرِ

    Stop the teacher regarding what he said of etiquette

    And make his area the highest rank

  24. ولا تخالفْه في قولٍ وفي عملِ

    ولا تخالفْه واحذرْ صولةَ البطرِ

    And do not oppose him in words or deeds

    And do not oppose him, and beware the wrath of rejection

  25. فإنه ناصحٌ لا شخصَ يُشْبُهه

    لكلّ مَن جاء من بَدو ومن حَضر

    For he is an advisor - there is no one who resembles him

    For all who come, from Bedouin and from settled

  26. واخفضْ جناحَك دأْباً للمعلمِ فَهْو

    الوالدُ المُشْفِق المشهور في الخبرِ

    And lower your wing humbly to the teacher, for he

    Is the caring father, famous for his news

  27. والقَ العدوّ بوجهِ غير ذِي كدرٍ

    وإن رَماك بفحشِ القول فاصطبِر

    And meet the enemy with a face devoid of gloom

    And if he throws at you vulgar words, be patient

  28. كنْ راضياً بقضاءِ اللهِ ذَا عِبرٍ

    في النفع والضُّرِّ والإعسار واليسرِ

    Be content with Allah's decree, full of lessons

    In benefit and harm, hardship and ease

  29. وإن حبيت فلا تُقْرط لذاكَ وإنْ

    أبغضت فالحبُّ والبغضا على قَدَر

    And if you love, do not be consumed by it, and if

    You hate, then love and hate are measured

  30. ولا تسافرْ مع الأنذالِ في طُرُق

    وكنْ مع المرتضى إن كنتَ ذَا سفِر

    And do not travel with the riffraff on roads

    And be with the agreeable one if you travel

  31. فدمْ وعشْ وابقَ في خيرٍ وعافية

    وفي معاشٍ رغيدٍ مدة العُمُرِ

    Stay, live and remain in goodness and wellbeing

    And in plentiful, comfortable living for the duration of life
