1. بعادُك يا عذبَ الثنايا ولا الصدُّ

    وصدُّك يا حلوَ السجايا ولا البعدُ

    Your distance, O sweet of intimacy, or disdain

    And your disdain, O gentle of character, or distance

  2. بَعدْتُمْ فزادَ القلبُ شوقاً وحسرةً

    قرُبتم فزادَ الهمُّ والحزنُ والوجدُ

    You were distant, so my heart grew more longing and sorrow

    You drew near, so worries, sadness and love increased

  3. إذا لم يكن من ذَيْنِ بُدٌّ فليس لي

    عزاءٌ ولا لي من لقائكمُ بدُّ

    If there is no escape from these two, then I have

    No consolation, nor escape from seeing you

  4. وإني لفي همٍّ وفكرِ وحيرةٍ

    إذا دَامَ لي هذا الجفاءُ وذَا الصَّدُّ

    I am indeed worried, thinking, and confused

    If this estrangement and disdain persist for me

  5. إلامَ النوى والبعدُ والهجرُ والقِلى

    وإعراضُكم والنأيُ والدخلُ والحقدُ

    What is this intention, distance, estrangement, shortness

    And your indifference, aloofness, entry and hatred?

  6. فلا غروَ إنْ أجريتُ من بعد نَأْيِكُمْ

    دُموعاً على خَدِّي يضيقُ بها الخد

    It is no wonder that after your estrangement

    Tears flow down my cheeks, barely contained

  7. وإني لا أنفكُّ من غُلّةِ الصدى

    إذا لم تَجُدْ بالوصل لي والهوى وعدُ

    And I cannot be rid of the heaviness of rejecting me

    If you do not generously allow union and love

  8. فتاةٌ كأن الشمس فوق جبينها

    تلألأُ إشراقا وقد حلَّها سعدُ

    A maiden whose forehead the sun shines radiantly upon

    Blessed with happiness, tresses cascading down

  9. أغصنٌ نقَا ذيَّاك أم خُوطٌ بانةٍ

    تميلُ به الأردافُ أم ذلك القدُّ

    Branches, is that your soft form or threads of pearls

    Swaying on hips, or is that your stature?

  10. وتحت لئامِ الثغرِ دُرٌّ ولؤلؤٌ

    وحبُّ جُمَانِ أم ثناياك أم عِقْدُ

    Under the rubies of your lips, a pearl and gems

    Is it the love of pearls or your kisses or your necklace?

  11. ووجهك أم بدرٌ وشمسٌ منيرةٌ

    وخدُّك أم ماءُ النضارِ أم الوردُ

    Your face, is it a full moon or a shining sun?

    Your cheek, is it pure water or a rose?

  12. وفي صدرك المصقولِ رمحٌ محَدَّدٌ

    يماثلُه حُقٌّ مِن العاجِ أم نَهْدُ

    In your polished chest, a sharpened spear

    Rivaled only by true ivory or breast

  13. يكادُ يقدُّ القلبَ من قبلِ بَرْدِه

    وينقدُّ فيه ليس يمنعُه جِلْدُ

    It almost takes the heart by its coolness

    Melting it, neither skin nor heart can stop it

  14. وزَندُكِ هذا أم نُضارٌ وفضةٌ

    وريقُك أم صرفُ المدامة أم شَهْدُ

    Is your wrist this or radiance and silver?

    Your saliva, is it wine or honey or nectar?

  15. ومن أعجبِ الأشياء ريقُك في فمي

    زلالٌ برودٌ وهْو في كبدي وقدُ

    Of wonders, your saliva in my mouth

    Is cool, soothing water, yet in my liver, blazing

  16. يُهَيِّجُ نارَ الشوق والوجد والأسى

    فأعجب به من مُسعرٍ جمرُهُ بردُ

    It kindles the fire of yearning, passion and sorrow

    Wondrous that its coals are cooled by it

  17. شفاءٌ وداءٌ للقلوب لأنه

    تذوبُ له الأحشاءُ والقلبُ والكبدُ

    A cure and affliction for hearts, as it

    Melts entrails, heart and liver when near

  18. شفاءٌ إذا ما القربُ جادَ بلثمةٍ

    وداءٌ لنا إن سخا إمَّا تضمنَّه بُعدُ

    A cure if proximity allowed a kiss

    An affliction as distance kept it from us

  19. وأعجبُ مِن ذا أن جسمك ليِّنٌ

    وقلبَك يا عذبَ اللَّمى حجرٌ صلدُ

    Wondrous than this, your body is soft

    While your heart, O gentle one, is hard as stone

  20. أتُصفِى الهوى يا قلبُ من لا يودُّني

    فما يستحقُّ الودَّ من لا له ودُ

    Do you purify, O heart, love from one who does not love me?

    One who does not reciprocate love does not deserve it

  21. فلستَ بقلبي إن وددتَ سِوى

    الذي له الشكرُ والعلياءُ والكرم العدُّ

    You are not in my heart if you love any

    But those of gratitude, nobility and generosity

  22. ومَنْ كفُّه بحرٌ ومَنْ نَيلُه حَياً

    ومَنْ خوفهُ في قلب أعدائِه يَغُدُو

    Whose palm is an ocean, whose Nile constantly flows

    Whose fear dwells in the hearts of enemies at dawn

  23. ومَنْ يفضح الشجعان بأساً وشدةً

    ومَنْ ماله في الجودِ يقسمه الوفدُ

    Who shames the valiant with might and force

    Whose wealth is spread by delegates in generosity

  24. ومن يحقرُ الدنيا جزاءَ لمادحٍ

    ومَنْ كلُّ عينٍ ترتضيه إذا يبدُو

    Who scorns the world as reward for one who praises him

    Every eye desires to see him when he appears

  25. ومَنْ بيديه الأمرُ والنهْىُ في الورَى

    ومَنْ في ذُرَا العليا له الشكرُ والحمدُ

    In whose hands is command and prohibition in the lands

    To whom thanks and praise belongs in the heights

  26. ومَنْ بيديه الملكُ والعدلُ والهدَى

    وتدبير أمرِ الخلقِ والحَلُّ والعَقدُ

    In whose hands lies kingship, justice and guidance

    To order affairs of people, solutions and bonds

  27. ومن هو في الدين الحنيفي قيِّمٌ

    ومَنْ هو في تدبيره مَلِكٌ فردُ

    Who in the true religion is righteous

    Whose rule makes him unique

  28. هو العدلُ سلطانُ بن سيف بن مالك

    إمامُ الورى الزاكي الفتى الملك الجعدُ

    He is justice, Sultan bin Saif bin Malik

    The guiding imam, the pure, distinguished and wise king

  29. يجلُّ عن التمثيلِ بالبحرِ راحةً

    ولكنَّ من جدوى يديه له مدُّ

    He abstains from similes about the sea at ease

    But the reach of his hands is sufficient for him

  30. ولا الأُسْدُ في البأساء لكن تعلمت

    فأضحى له التشريفُ من بأسِه الأسدُ

    Not a lion in might, but he learned

    So honor from his might made lions cubs to him

  31. فما عاملٌ إلا وأنت سِنانه

    ولا راحةٌ إلا وأنت لها زندُ

    No worker but you are his blade

    No rest but you are its purpose

  32. ولا حازمٌ إلا وأنتَ جناحُه

    ولا صارمٌ إلا وأنت له حدُّ

    No resolute but you are his wing

    No executioner but you are his edge

  33. مُرِ الدهرَ يفعلْ ما تريدُ فإنّه

    مطيعٌ لأمر السيّد المرتضى العبدُ

    Command time as you wish, it obeys

    Submissive to the order of its trusted master

  34. غمامُ نداه يخجلُ الغيثَ هامياً

    سخاءٌ ولا برق لديه ولا رعْدُ

    His call to arms shames clouds gathering rain

    Generosity with no need for lightning or thunder

  35. عنادُك للطاغين بيضٌ صوارمٌ

    ومعلمة صُفْرٌ ومقربةٌ جُرّدُ

    Your defiance of tyrants is white blades

    A school, yellow banners, drawn swords

  36. وسُمْرٌ لِدانٌ ذابلٌ وعواسلٌ

    وشيبٌ وشبانٌ جهابذةٌ مُرْدُ

    Destruction, decay, fallen, and furies

    Old age, youth, giants, and solid

  37. تُحامِى عن الدنيا كأنك والدُ

    شفيقٌ على كل الورى وهُمُ وُلْدُ

    You defend the world as if you were its father

    Caring for all people who are your children

  38. لأنّك سيفٌ يا بنَ سيفِ مالك

    وولدك سيفٌ والزمانُ لكم غمد

    For you are a sword, O son of the sword of Malik

    Your son is a sword and time is your sheath

  39. وأنّك في عزٍّ أنيلٍ ورفعةٍ

    مليكٌ تساوَى عندك النحسُ والسعدُ

    You are in power, glory and esteem

    A king to whom fortune and misfortune are equal

  40. ولولاكَ صار الدهرُ للناسِ عبرةً

    ولا ظهرَ التقوى ولا عُرفَ الرشدُ

    Without you, time would make people regretful

    Righteousness and propriety would not be known

  41. ولا ظهر الدينُ الحنيفي ولا الهدى

    ولا اشتهرَ الجدوى ولا ذكرَ الرّفدُ

    Nor would the true religion or guidance appear

    Neither glory proclaimed nor help come

  42. ولا التذَّ أهلُ الدهرِ يوماً برقدةٍ

    ولا سُلَّ سيفُ الحق وانتشرَ العهدُ

    People would not fear a day of slumber

    The sword of truth would not be drawn or covenant spread

  43. ولا ثبتتْ للدينِ سورٌ وكعبةٌ

    ولا شرُفتْ نَزْوى ولا بُنِيَ المجدُ

    No walls or Kaaba would stand for the faith

    Neither sanctuary rise nor glory built

  44. فجدْ بالذي يفنى ولو كثرَ العدى

    أجُدْ بالذي يبقى كما بقي الخلدُ

    So strive with what perishes, though enemies abound

    Strive with what remains, like immortality

  45. ومن أينَ ذا يفنى وإن ثوابَه

    لباقٍ بقاءَ الدهر ما بَعْدَه بُعدُ

    How can this perish when its reward

    Remains, lasting eternally, nothing beyond it?

  46. إذا شئت جدواه فحُلَّ برحله

    وسلم ولم ينطق سؤالٌ ولا وعدُ

    If you wished its benefits, then journey to it

    In peace, no questions or promises made

  47. فطوبى لكم يا آل يعربَ إنكم

    رقيتم رقيّاً في العُلى ما له حدُ

    Good tidings to you, O clan of Ya'rub, you

    Ascended sublimely to the highest summit

  48. ودُونكم غراءَ زُفّتْ إليكم

    تفاوَحَ منها المسك والعنبرُ الوردُ

    Below you, brides adorned were brought to you

    From whom musk, ambergris and roses diffused

  49. عروساً في بُرُودِ حليلةِ

    مفوقةِ ما ضمَّ أمثالَها بُردُ

    A bride in the coolness of the bridal chamber

    Surpassing what the like of her contained in coolness

  50. أبوها جميلٌ والمبرِّدُ عمُّها

    وقيسٌ لها خالٌ وأوسٌ لها جَدُّ

    Her father beautiful, al-Murrid her uncle

    Qais her uncle, Aus her grandfather

  51. فأجزلْ لها مهراً جزيلاً فما لها

    سوى قصدِكم والعزُّ من سُؤلِها قصدُ

    So grant her a plentiful dowry, for she wants

    Only your company, honor in requesting you her aim

  52. تسيرُ مسيرَ الشمس شرقا ومغرباً

    وتظهرُ جدواكم ولو كَرِهَ الضدُّ

    She travels the path of the sun, east and west

    Revealing your generosity, though enemies disapprove

  53. قوافٍ إذا أُنشدْنَ يوماً بمجلسِ

    تفاوَحَ منها العطرُ والنشرُ والنَّدُّ

    Melodies, which if recited one day in a gathering

    Would diffuse from it fragrance, joy and tenderness

  54. تبث ثناءَ ليس يحجبُ سيْرَها

    إذا غامرتْ في السيرِ غورٌ ولا نجدُ

    Spreading praise nothing can obscure

    If it plunges into the depths, no gorge or plateau prevents
