1. قِفُوا قلنا في ربعِ ليلى مَواقفُ

    فإني وإن باينتموني لواقفُ

    Stop, we said, in the ruins of Layla's dwellings,

    Though you have parted from me, I am still standing.

  2. فإن كان ديني دينكم عرِّجُوا بنَا

    وعرجوا على أطْلالها لا تخالِفُوا

    If my religion is your religion, then join me,

    And join me in visiting her abodes, do not differ.

  3. فإِن لم تَعُرجُوا ساعِدُوني على البُكا

    فإن البكا للهمِّ والحزنِ كاشفُ

    If you do not join me, then help me in weeping,

    For weeping alleviates grief and sorrow.

  4. دعوني أُرحْ قلبي من الهمَّ والأسَى

    فقلبي من التفريق والهجْر واجفُ

    Let me relieve my heart of worries and pain,

    For my heart is afflicted by separation and estrangement.

  5. ولا تكثروا لومى كفاني لأنني

    بدأني وأسبابِ المودة عارفُ

    And do not blame me much, for it is enough that

    I know the causes of affection and love.

  6. سلوٌّ وحبٌّ راحلٌ ومخيمٌ

    وصبرٌ وسقمٌ بأئنٌ ومؤالفُ

    Night and love are departed, and camp,

    Patience and illness, moaning and harmony.

  7. ودمعٌ وعقلٌ حائرٌ ومباينٌ

    وقلبٌ وحبٌّ طائعٌ ومخالفُ

    Tears and confused mind, and aversion,

    And a heart, and obedient and differing love.

  8. ولا غَرْو إِن أسلبت في الربْع أدْمعي

    فلى في حمى لبلَى ليالٍ سوالفُ

    Do not wonder if I shed my tears at night in the ruins,

    For I have tearful nights that are intimate friends.

  9. سقَى ربعَها نوءُ السِّماكين هامعٌ

    من المزْنِ هطّالُ المدامعِ واكفُ

    The rain of the Two Simaakin Stars has watered its dwellings,

    Dripping copious tears from the clouds.

  10. كمَا قد سقته بكرةً وعشيةً

    غداةً النوَى منى الدموعُ الذوارفُ

    Just as it watered it at dawn and evening,

    Tomorrow the rain from me are pouring tears.

  11. ألا فاعْكفُوا إن كنتمُ لي حبائباً

    عَلَى مَرْبع الأجبابِ إني لعاكفُ

    Oh, stand if you are truly my beloved,

    At the ruins of the curved encampment, I am standing.

  12. على مَرْبع بالمنحني قد تغاورتْ

    عليه من الريح الشمال عواصفُ

    At the ruins of the curved one, upon which

    The north winds have exchanged conversations.

  13. عفَا بعد سكانٍ وأهلٍ وجيزةٍ

    بحيثُ ثِقالُ المزنِ فيه عَوَاكِفُ

    After inhabitants and people and spaciousness vanished,

    Where the downpour of clouds lingers.

  14. وَقَفْتُ أحييه وتنهلُّ أدمُعي

    لأنّ شفاءَ القلب تلك المواقفُ

    I stood to greet it and my tears flowed,

    For visiting ruins heals the heart.

  15. أسائِله عنهم وأنَّي يجيبني

    رسومٌ تعفْتَها الرياحُ العواصِفُ

    I ask about them but the winds answer me,

    With traces erased by the stormy winds.

  16. فأمستْ ظباءُ الوحش فيها رواتعاً

    وكان بها البيضُ الحسانُ العفَائفُ

    So the beasts of the wild now rest in it,

    Where the beautiful white antelopes once frolicked.

  17. وعَهدي بها والعيش أغْيدُ ناعمٌ

    وظِلِّى بهاتيك المرابع وَارِفُ

    And I remember it when life was blissful,

    With its shadows and ruins enveloping me.

  18. سقى ربع ليلى كلُّ غادٍ ورائحٍ

    وإن طافَ بي من شوقها اليوم طائِفُ

    The ruins of Layla's dwellings watered every visitor and traveller,

    And though yearning for it circles me today.

  19. فتاةٌ لها كالشمس وجهٌ وكالدجى

    أثيثٌ وكالبِلَّوْرِ خَدٌّ وسَالفُ

    A maiden whose face is like the sun and whose night is furnishings,

    And whose cheek is like crystal, elegant and intimate.

  20. إذا قعدت تجرى على الأرض رقةً

    وإمَّا مشت تهتزن منها الرَّوادِفُ

    When she sits she flows with tenderness over the ground,

    And when she walks, pillars tremble from her gait.

  21. وإن قابلت يدر السماء بوجهها

    يخر لها من سمكه وهو كاسف

    And if she faces you, the sky rains with her face,

    And the fish in the sea bow down abashed before her.

  22. وتخجلُ نورَ الشمس غرةُ وجهها

    وتفضحُ خُوطَ البان منها المعَاطِفُ

    The radiance of her glowing cheek shames the sunlight,

    And the threads of her cloak expose the dresses.

  23. تؤثِّر فِي جثمانها وشىُ بُردِها

    فتؤلمها أثوابُها والمطَارِفُ

    She prefers in her body the touch of its coldness,

    So her clothes and scarves pain her.

  24. يشفُّ سَناها مِن وراء لِحَافِها

    فليس تُوارِى صَفحتَيها الملاحِفُ

    Her brilliance gleams through her wrappings,

    Which cannot conceal her radiant cheeks.

  25. تعوَّد قتلَ العاشقين كأنّه

    مليكٌ على قتل الأنامِ محالِفُ

    She is accustomed to killing lovers, as if

    Slaughtering people is an act allied with her kingdom.

  26. تعود بذل الحاء سلطان سيفنا

    له من علاه في البرايا لطائف

    She is accustomed to bestowing death, the sultan of our swords,

    Which for her glory has allies in the wilderness.

  27. حليمٌ يُجَازِى المذنبين بِعفْوه

    فما زال يعفو عنهم وهو لاطِفُ

    Clement, who forgives the sinful with his pardon,

    So he continues to forgive them as he is gentle.

  28. أبَا مَعشر الإسلام إنّ إمامكم

    إِمام تقى لا تَعْتريه الرواجفُ

    O community of Islam, your imam

    Is a pious imam, whom tremors do not rock.

  29. فلا تيأسُوا إِمَّا اجترحتمْ حريمُة

    له من سجاياهُ عليكم عواطفُ

    So do not despair, whatever sacrilege you commit,

    For his noble character has compassion for you.

  30. ولولاهُ لانهدَّ الهدى وتضعضعت

    جبالِّ حُلومٍ واشْرأَبَّ المُخالِفُ

    Were it not for him, guidance would collapse and

    The mountains of virtues crumble and dissenters gloat.

  31. وحلتْ بدنياكُمْ رواجفُ أعصرٍ

    وعمقكمُ بالذل تلكَ الرواجفُ

    And your world would be afflicted with the tremors of an era,

    And those tremors would bury you deeply in humiliation.

  32. وزعزعَ ركنُ الدينِ وانهّد سُورهُ

    وعطّل آثارُ التقى والمصاحِفُ

    The pillar of the faith would be shaken and its wall collapse,

    And the traces of piety and scriptures vanish.

  33. وإن الفَتى سُلطانَ ليثٌ غضنفرٌ

    تخرّ لهُ طَوْعَ القيادِ الخَلائِفُ

    But the prince is a fierce lion, a warrior,

    Before whom the caliphs' armies submit.

  34. مليكٌ له الدنيا تدين مخافةً

    وتعنُو له أمْلاكُها والطوائفُ

    A king who possesses the world, which fears him,

    And its dominions and tribes obey him.
