    O river named Al-Asgharain

Though you've been wronged by the name Al-Asghar

Had people been fair, they'd have named you Al-Kawthar

Yet the people of earth called you Al-Asghar

Rise above all the rivers of the world

From every corner and every village, and be proud

For true merit lies in the noble deed

That people see as grand and proud

Why do I see the ignorant in heedlessness?

If they were fair, they'd have named you Al-Kawthar

    O soul of human souls

Of the rich and poor alike

O best of all the rivers

From all the lands, green and bright

You raised your prices to be bought

With pure silver and jewel's might

So you may rise above the heights

Like a heavenly fountain of light

O master of the rivers of our land

Whoever dwells near you will never know plight

And whoever bought what you irrigate

Of palms and land will never feel contrite

You are sacred, above any river or stream

Blessed are those who buy and those who sell

If the seller loses what he sold

He gains in what the buyer's well

Your water is as if from Heaven's gardens

Or Paradise's sweet musk and ambergris

    Sweet in taste and flavor

Like the finest honey and sugar

    As if rosewater was mixed

In your most pure and pristine water

Without you our land would be barren

Empty of crops, with nothing sown or tilled

No homes for us would be appealing

    Lovely, splendid, or finely built

    You, Al-Asgharain, are blessed

Above any river or Ja'far's spring

May you, as you flow each morn, never run dry

Flowing effortlessly, never compelled or coerced

As if your water is supplied

    Effortlessly from the oceans immersed

May God revive you with plentiful rain

Cascading from the clouds, gushing and immersed

So the earth greens with its thriving crops

With its lush, verdant and brilliant produce

Some of it green, fresh and young

Some of it red, vivid and red

    Some of it golden yellow

And some of it yellow, bright and pure

May you never know scarcity when rains pour down

Or heat waves scorch from an orator's minbar
