إمَّا فَررْتَ من العِدَى

أين الفرارُ من الردَى

Whether you fled from wrong

Where can one flee from fate?

وإذا سلمتَ اليوم منه

يأتي القضاءُ به غدَا

And if today you are spared

Destiny will bring it tomorrow

فإذا أتَى ماذا تقو

لُ إذا دَعاك إلى الندَا

So if it comes, what will you say

When it calls you to trial?

الر أىُ مِنّي إنْ أتى

قُلْ مرحباً بك إن بدَا

My opinion, if it comes

Say "Welcome, now it's begun"

لو تُفْتَدى منه بملء

الأرض لم يُقبلْ فِدَا

If all earth's riches ransomed you

No ransom would be accepted

لو كنتَ في ظلماتِ بحرِ

زاخر لك لاهتدَى

If you were in the ocean's dark depths

Replete with wealth, you'd not be guided

أو كنتَ فوقَ الراسيا

تِ الشامخاتِ لأنجدَا

Or atop the highest minarets

You'd find no rescue there

فتأهَّبنَّ ولا تكن

في غَفْلةٍ متردِّدَا

So prepare yourself, do not be

Hesitant, reluctant, bewildered

فلعلّه يأتي مفا

جأةً فكن متزوِّدَا

Perhaps suddenly it will come

So be well provisioned

لا تلْقَه برذائل

متلوثاً متعمدَا

Do not meet it with vices

Deliberately mired

إن كنتَ تبغي الفوزَ في

روضِ الجنانِ مخلَّدَا

If you seek bliss in the garden

Of Eden, immortalized

فاغسلْ يديك من الزما

نِ وأهلِه متفردَا

Wash your hands of worldliness

And worldly folk, isolated

واعبدْ إلهَك بكرةً

وعشيةً طولَ المدَى

Worship your God morn and eve

All lifelong steadfast in worship

واقنعْ بما تُؤْتَى ولا

تُطْلِق لسانَك للجَدَى

Be content with what you're given

Don't let your tongue lead to woe

لَكن إذا أُعْطِيتَ شيئاً

لا تَرُدَّ المُسْعِدَا

But if given something, do not

Spurn it, embitter the giver

أبَى الله أن يعطى الفتى ما يودُّه

وإن شاءَ أمراً بامرىء من يردُّه

God refused the youth his every wish

And if He wills can make him rue his way

وما المرءُ إلا صورةٌ وبهيمةٌ

يزينُه حسنُ الطباعِ ورشدُه

Man is but an image, a beast

Beautified by noble traits and wisdom

فهذا محالٌ ما لَه قطُّ غايةٌ

انشرح شَيئاً لَيْس يُبلغُ حدُّه

So this is impossible, nothing has

An end, expand and you won't reach it

إذا ما رضيتمْ بالقضاء استرحتم

وما ضرَّكُم سوءُ القضاءِ وجَهدهُ

When you accept destiny, you'll be at peace

And nothing hurts you like resisting fate
