1. دَعُوه يبكى دماً ودَمْعاَ

    يندبُ رسماً عَفَا ورَبْعَا

    Let him cry tears of blood and weeping

    Lamenting a figure of kindness and openness

  2. لا تعذلُوه في الحب جهلاً

    فهو عن العذلِ صَمَّ سَمعَا

    Do not rebuke him for ignorance in love

    For he is deaf to rebuke

  3. إذْ كان نِدِّى وروح وُدّى

    دَهْراً وكنَّا في الحب شرْعَا

    When he was my comfort and soul's delight

    For an age while we were immersed in love

  4. أَبْلَتْ موداتُه الليالى

    فصارَ ماءُ الودادِ لَمْعَا

    His affection wasted away the nights

    So the water of affection became glittering

  5. سَقياً لأيامِنا المواضِى

    إذْ كان خفضى بهن رَفْعَا

    Quenching the meadows of our days

    When my pride in him was exaltation

  6. أيام عودُ الشباب غضٌّ

    ونحن في روضتيه نَرْعَى

    Days when the boughs of youth were tender

    And we grazed in its meadow

  7. أيام ذاتِ اللَّمَى ترينى

    كالشمس وجهاً والليل فَرْعَا

    Days when she of languorous glances showed me

    Her face like the sun, her tresses night's darkness

  8. مَمْشُوقَةُ القدِّ ذاتُ سنٍّ

    لها تناهَى سبعاً وسبعَا

    She of the shapely neck and mature years

    Seven and seven climacterics past

  9. يا أيها العاذلونَ كُفُّوا

    عَنّى فما بي ليس بِدْعا

    O you who rebuke me, stop

    For my state is no innovation

  10. فلو تدفعون ما أُعَانى

    لمَا أَطَقْتم لذاك دَفْعَا

    If you could relieve my suffering

    You could not have borne the effort

  11. أبيتُ ذَا حَسرة كأنى

    مُسَهَّدٌ ساوَرَتْه أَفْعَى

    I passed the night in burning regret as though

    Bitten by an asp writhing in agony

  12. كيف اصطبارِى ونارُ شَوْقى

    قد غادرتْ في الفؤادِ لَذْعَا

    How can I show patience when the fire of passion

    Has left a blaze in my heart?

  13. لا تعجبُوا إن بكيتُ شوقاً

    مِن بعد إلفى دماً ودَمْعَا

    Do not wonder that I weep from yearning

    With blood and tears since we parted

  14. فجود دمعى أسى وشوقا

    كجود سلطان صار طبعا

    My pouring tears in agony and love

    Is like a sultan's nature become

  15. سليلُ سيفِ الملك الذي

    يقمعُ أهلَ الطغيان قمعَا

    Scion of the king whose sword

    Subdues the people of tyranny

  16. واليعربى النسبُ الذي

    يقطعُ عنق الأعداء قطْعَا

    He of pure Arab lineage

    Who severs the necks of enemies

  17. فاقَ الورَى مَحْتِداً وأصلا

    كما تعالى عِرْقاً وفَرْعَا

    He surpassed mankind in nobility

    In lineage and offshoot

  18. عمَّ البرايا ندًى وجوداً

    فاجتمعوا في ندَاه شرعَا

    He brought comfort and generosity to the land

    So they gathered in his openness

  19. سعيت للمكرمات طفلا

    لا زِلْتَ للمكرماتِ تَسْعَى

    I strove for favors as a child

    And still strive for favors

  20. أعدَيْتَ كلَّ الأنام جُوداً

    وجُدتَ حتى أفنيتَ جَمْعَا

    You surpassed all people in munificence

    And gave away a fortune

  21. لا غاب راجيك من جوادٍ

    إن جاءَ قصداً إليك يسْعَى

    No seeker of your bounty

    Came to you, and went empty-handed

  22. أنتَ لريبِ الزمان عَوْنى

    قد صرتَ حِصْناً لنا ودِرْعَا

    You are the comfort of a calamitous age

    You have become our fortress and coat of mail

  23. قد فُقْتَ أهل الزمان رأياً

    وحِجًى صافيا وصُنْعَا

    You surpassed the people of the times in wisdom

    An astute, accomplished genius

  24. أنتَ المليكُ الإمامُ عدلا

    لا زلتَ كلَّ الأنام تَرْعَى

    You are the just king

    You still shepherd all mankind

  25. أنتَ المرجَّى إنْ ظنَّ مزنٌ

    أو إن تمادى قطراً ورجْعَا

    You are the desired one, if a cloud gathers

    Or remoteness draws near

  26. لك يومَ الهياجِ قلبٌ

    يُزْرِى على الخافقيْن وُسْعَا

    In the day of turmoil, you have a heart

    Capacious enough for all the pulsating hearts

  27. لك وقْعٌ إذا المنايا

    في الحرب تغلى أشد وقْعَا

    In war, when death is rife

    You have the mightiest stroke

  28. أدعوك إن عَضَّني زمانى

    لا زلتَ للمكرمات تُدْعَى

    I call you if my time treats me harshly

    You still are called on for favors

  29. ما قلتُ ذَا الشعرَ فيك وحدى

    لكنه صارَ مِنك يَسْعَى

    I have not said this poetry for you alone

    But it flows from you

  30. هاكَ عروساً مِن ذِى ودادٍ

    فاخلعْ عليها الإحسانَ خَلْعَا

    So endow her with bounty and raiment

    She shines like the full moon

  31. كأنها البدر لاحَ نوراً

    أو كالثريَّا تَرُوقُ لَمْعَا

    Or Sirius glittering brightly

    She has no defect but for foes

  32. لا عيبَ فيها سوى الأعادِى

    تَسْفَعُهم في الأحشاءِ سَفْعَا

    Whom she smites in their entrails, smiting

    Pay her bride-price and be generous

  33. وادفعْ لها مَهْرَها وأجزل

    لأنها تستحق رَفْعَا

    For she deserves exaltation

    If she could speak

  34. لو أنها تستطيعُ نُطْقَا

    لافتخرتْ مُذْ أتتْك تَسْعَى

    She would boast, since coming to you

    She surpasses all poetry's rhythms

  35. فاقَتْ على نظمِ كلِّ شعرٍ

    لأنها في عُلاكَ تُدْعَى

    For she is called to your loftiness
