You are the beloved, the chosen one, and joy belongs to you
While I am the lover, the afflicted one, and grief is mine
You are wealthy, and never will you see one more humble
While I am poor, and have no riches except through you
You have, apart from God's creation, abundant fortune
While I have from you misery and sorrow
O dwellers of the valley of Arak, I see you
Not fearing any punishment from our Lord
You left the anguish of my heart behind heading
To Tihama, settling in the valley of Mina
When we met after a whole year passed
You did not allow me to ask how you have been after us
What wrong have I done to deserve your aloofness
Who of the slanderers has changed our bond?
If your servant has slipped into a sin
He repents if he has reaped something wrong
Have mercy on one who has lived his days
Loving you, with a changing complexion
If you truly do not allow
A visit, just say maybe, and perhaps we
So maybe he will get an excuse from you
And what I suffered from you becomes easy
Were it not for your image, and memories of
Trysts in the valley, and markings, he would not have lived
Love is sweetest at first
But when it takes over, it turns bitter
Minds almost lose reason, and selves
If not for the winds of your dwellings that passed by us
Look one day how my state clings to loving you
And how my passion has become
Passion has passed all people
But lingered when it saw me and deepened
It dwelled and inhabited my soul
What can I say to its claims of being my home?
If I deny what it claims, contradicting
The witnesses of my tears will tell my secret near you
The reason for the attachment is a glance at their beauty
So it took hold when I turned my eyes
What is the way to freedom when I
Exposed myself to disgrace with certainty?
So I became obsessed with that one, confused
When I used to be just me before
So for how long will I waste my time with wishes
Remaining between the two abodes, settled
Why has every new event ceased from me
And humiliated me with prisons and spears
And added me to it, closed my deficiencies
And settled me in the abode of dignity and loftiness?
I do not aspire to the means of others
When I was with him in fortune and riches
That generous, chosen, king whom
I never visited but he was generous and did good
I made my poetry pure of praise of others
I never praised an immortal or benefactor
I have grown up in his lands and neighborhood
Reaping the most delicious pleasures
He is my flower and inspiration in times of clamor
And provisioned me in life, if times get hard
With his kind soul whose kindness
My lands are accustomed to, whether far or near
The open, vast, the abundant, the benevolent
The prudent, overwhelming, brother of the sublime, vast
The perfect of gifts, his generosity encompasses
All people, hastening or slowly coming
O best of walkers on earth and riders
Of spirited, lofty-built stallions
O glorious, you have built a glory none like it
Of master or glorious one in this life
The one who rejected Prophet Mohamed
Became, by your gifts, a believing servant
So merit bears me witness that you are unique
Among us, and you are indeed the best gain
My talent, that was like the sea, wearied
Of enumerating your praise, even if I took eras
O singular in generosity, I am singular
In poetry, so pardon and take what we can manage
There has come to you from the Lord of eloquence a eulogy
That we strew over the finest of praises and delight
Like transparent gems scattering pearls
So pick it up, you who rejoiced in what we have displayed
It is a pleasure for onlookers and a delight
But in it is death and demise
It is the demise of one who wore your cloak
And death to your enemies, people of rancor
Take it, for you match it, from a poet
Whose talent through praising you became a mine
If Ahmad saw it, he would have added it
To his poetry, inclined toward it, and deemed it good
Or if it was recited with his, he would have preferred it
To love, though tongues cannot be prevented
