1. وَرَد الكتابُ من الحبيبِ الواثقِ

    باللهِ ربِّ العالمينَ الخالقِ

    The letter came from the faithful beloved

    By Allah, Lord of the worlds, the Creator

  2. وردَ الكتابُ من الحبيبِ أخِي التقَى

    علمِ الهُدَى نسلِ الكريمِ الحاذِقِ

    The letter came from my devout brother

    Of guidance's knowledge, offspring of the gracious connoisseur

  3. أهلِ النباهةِ والبلاغَةِ والهدى

    وأخِى الفصاحةِ والمقالِ الصادقِ

    People of intelligence, eloquence and guidance

    And my brother of fluency and honest words

  4. وابن الأَخِلاّءِ الذين عهدتهمْ

    مِن قبلُ أهلُ عزائمٍ ومُوَاثقِ

    Son of intimate friends whom I knew

    As people of resolve and loyalty

  5. وابنِ الذين فِعالُهم مشكورةٌ

    بين الورَى بمغاربٍ مَشارقِ

    Son of those whose deeds are appreciated

    Among people both east and west

  6. أَعْنِي به الفَطِنَ اللبيبَ المرتضَى

    وأخَا الرضىّ أهل النجَارِ السَّابقِ

    I mean the prudent, wise, chosen one

    And brother of acceptance, people of excellence of old

  7. ويكادُ مِن كرمِ الطباعِ تُسِيغُه

    لكنّه حَتْفٌ لكلِّ مُنافِق

    His noble nature almost redeems him

    Yet he is the ruin of every hypocrite

  8. أكرمْ به مِنْ صاحبٍ ومُصاحبٍ

    أحسنْ به مِنْ صادَقٍ ومُصَادِق

    Nobler than a companion or befriender

    Kinder than a true or loyal friend

  9. لما أتاني خطُّهُ وكِتابُه

    كاللؤلؤ الرطْب اللطيف الرائقِ

    When his writing and letter reached me

    Like fresh, gentle, scintillating pearls

  10. ذرفتْ مدامعُ مُقْلتِي متذاكراً

    عَهداً قديماً بالمكان السَّامِقِ

    My eyes shed tears remembering

    A past time in the lofty place

  11. ففضضتُ خَتْمَ كتابِه ونشرتُه

    فعرفتُه مِنْ سيدِّي ومُوابِقي

    I opened its seal and unfolded it

    And recognized it was from my master and confidant

  12. أبدي جواهرَ منطِقي لجوابهِ

    وخفوقَ قلبي مثلَ قلبِ الوامِقِ

    I will perpetually express the gems of my speech in reply

    And the fluttering of my heart like the throbbing heart

  13. فَطَفِقْتُ أياماً بهِ متحيراً

    وأجيلُ أفْكارِي بقلبٍ خانِقِ

    Then for days I was confused by it

    My thoughts roaming with a choking heart

  14. وأنا القَؤُول أعدُّ نفسي ماهراً

    في الشعرِ رَبُّ نوادرٍ ودَقائِق

    And I, the poet, counted myself skillful

    In poetry, Lord of rarities and subtleties

  15. لكنْ أرَى تركَ الجوابِ سفاهة

    وأقولُ ترْكُ الرد طبعُ المارِقِ

    But I see leaving the reply foolish

    And I say leaving no response is the way of the apostate

  16. واعذرْ وسامحْ إنني متكلفٌ

    لكنْ ظفرتُ به بعونِ الرازِقِ

    Forgive and pardon me for being pretentious

    Yet I succeeded in it by the aid of the Sustainer
