O home of my beloved, though separation from you brings me sorrow and grief,

My heart is filled with sadness and distress at this parting,

The days between us pass, bringing neither hope nor despair,

Yet your memory always torments me wherever I am.

With my own eyes I saw their caravan enter the valley,

At times visible, at others obscured when the sands shift.

But you there, rider racing towards the island tirelessly,

Deliver a message amongst them that though I obey, my own counsel stands.

If only your affairs were settled while the people's matters concluded,

Do you not fear a people who show you no mercy,

Who swoop upon you rapidly like preying eagles?

Sons of a people who blamed you though God did no harm.

Nobles of Persia, sons of kings who command great armies,

They hasten to you while you gather hay and firewood.

You are two factions; one lacks the boldness of lions,

The other is destroyed seeking mere sustenance.

An awesome darkness from your border threatens you,

What has made you slumber in heedlessness,

When you see the flames of war already kindled?

Please relieve my anxiety with wise counsel that moistens my arid heart,

And be not like one who pretends deafness when asked to relieve distress.

Ready your steeds and unsheathe your swords, prepare arrows and spearheads,

Cloister your women and children lest they perish in panic.

Do not abandon each other to misfortune, as you did at Mount Bishah,

Keep watch till their horses are seen returning defeated.

Let neither worldly wealth nor ambition deceive you,

By clinging to such hopes you will never be revived.

My people, do not let your fertile land be ravaged,

I fear the enemy's axe will strike at its very roots!

O people, do not feel secure about your women,

It is ruin that uproots your origins, who has seen or heard the like?

Appoint your affairs to God, your refuge in war's tumult,

Capable at all times whether fortune smiles or frowns.

Not distracted from you by any property or children,

Your border towns preoccupy him more than anything.

He milks fortune's teats unceasingly, triumphant one day, vanquished the next,

    Now pursuing, now pursued.

His age has only increased his bitterness and resolve,

His neck unbending, his claws and fangs intact.

Mighty of arm, fearless, undaunted by war,

He challenges all mankind to battle if they dare.

I have given you sincere advice without self-interest,

So awaken, the best knowledge is that which benefits.

This message I send, consider it a warning,

He who sees the wisdom in it, and he who hears.

With eyes like a coward's yet awe-striking fangs,

His brilliance shines like lightning through pitch darkness.

I see you fascinated by a land like a ship swarmed with insects,

Adorned in clothes of safety while this lion gathers his strength.

He hungers and believes wealth will preserve him,

Grasping at any fortune he stumbles upon greedily.

Ready your steeds, summon your resolve, steel yourselves with patience not despair,

If overcome in your lands, you will meet with calamity.

Do not be destroyed defending camels not your own,

The enemy aims to deal you a massive blow.

Do not produce wealth for your enemies, if they prevail

They will seize you and all your lands together.

Alas, neither cattle nor property will remain for you,

If you are severed at the roots nothing will restore them.

Wealth does not last forever for its owners,

If loss befalls them even once, subsequent gains are futile.

Of what use is the former glory of your forefathers,

If their descendants decline, submitting in disgrace?

Rise up on your feet in defiance, then take fright,

Deliverance may come to he who is afraid.

He sleeps but a little, for anxiety nearly cracks his ribs,

His cares for your borderlands keep him awake.

My people, you have a glorious inheritance from your ancestors,

I dread that it will fade and vanish away.
