1. أَعاذِلَ إِنَّ المالَ أَعلَمُ أَنَّهُ

    وَجامِعَهُ لِلغائِلاتِ الغَوائِلِ

    I blame not wealth, though I know full well

    That it gathers to itself the misfortunes of fate;

  2. مَتى تَجعَليني فَوقَ نَعشِكِ تَعلَمي

    أَيُغني مَكاني أَبكُري وَأَفائِلي

    When will you let me stand above your bier and know

    Whether my presence or my property avail?

  3. وَما المَرءُ إِلّا هامَةٌ أَو بَلِيَّةٌ

    يُصَفِّقُها داعٍ لَهُ غَيرُ غافِلِ

    Man is but a passion or an affliction

    Clapped at by one who for another's mishap is blind.
