1. قد بان قلبي الذي الأشواق ديدنه

    بحيث لم ير بل لم يدر موطنه

    My heart, whose habit is yearning, has appeared

    In a place where none has seen, nor knows its abode

  2. لما جهلت مكانا صار يسكنه

    سألتها عن فؤادي أين مسكنه

    When I was ignorant of where it resides

    I asked her about my heart, where is its dwelling

  3. لانه ضاع مني يوم مسراها

    فوجهت وجهها نحوي وقد سمعت

    For it was lost to me the day I gladdened her

    So she turned her face towards me and she had heard

  4. ما قلته وعلى مارمته اطلعت

    وفي جواب سؤالي رأفة شرعت

    What I said and understood what I hinted

    And in answering my question, she began gracefully

  5. قالت لدينا قلوب جمة جمعت

    فأيها انت تعني قلت أشقاها

    She said: "We have many hearts gathered here"

    So which of them, I said, is its most wretched
