My eyes wept and they had the right to their weeping
Weeping and wailing are to no avail
For the Lion of God, when on that morn they said
Alas! Hamzah lies there slain!
All Muslims were afflicted by his death there
And the Prophet himself was stricken by the blow
Abu Ya'la, the places of honor are yours!
You were a man of glory and virtue.
Upon you be your Lord's peace in gardens
Where eternal bliss that never ends is found
Take patience, O Hashim's excellent ones
All your deeds are fair and fine.
God's Messenger is forbearing and sublime
Speaking by God's command, he says
Oh, would there were one to convey my words
To Liyâ'! Henceforth days will revolve.
Ere this day they knew and tasted
The shock of our encounters that assuage all hurts
Have you forgot our blow at Badr's cistern
When swift death came upon you at morn?
That morn when Abû Jahl lay slain
With vultures hovering and wheeling o'er him.
And 'Utbah and his son fell together
And Shaybah whom the sword, bright-polished, slew
And we made Umayyah a plaything, mocking him
With a camel's guts wrapped round his neck.
The Bani Rabî'ah were suing Hind
But from them nought remains but remnants.
Weep on, O Hind, and spare not your weeping!
For you are one whose tears flow freely down.
Desist, O Hind, from any show of gladness
At Hamzah's fate, for your might is brought low!
