If I have lost my strength and vigor
And old age has overtaken me
I have no regrets, for God has granted
Me noble moments beyond pride or conceit
I am of those whom you have heard
Responded and obeyed God's call to duty
They repented and were not tempted
By treachery, affliction, or discord
They sacrificed the passions of their souls
And did not consider this life the fate of ages
They did not take other than their Prophet
As bosom friends or confidants
They were led by the likes of Sa'd and Mundhir
And the virtuous Abd al-Harith
And Nu'man, Ibn al-Jadd, and Thabit ibn Qays
And the patient Ibn 'Afran
And the likes of 'Amr and Imru' al-Qays
And Mahmud and Abu 'Amr
And the unnamed nobles among them
What valiant heroes in their tribes!
A band with the Commander of the Faithful
The man 'Amir and Zayd and Zayd Abu Bakr
With Ibn Kanud and Ibn Juhsh and Mus'ab
And he of the stricken shoulder on Badr's day
Talhah, Hajjaj, Hatib of their number
Ibn 'Uwamm is not of their ilk
'Umar, 'Uthman ibn 'Affan and the youth
Abu Murthad who earned reward thereby
Their good deeds were multiplied
Unlike the shame of al-Mashhad
