وَعَوراءَ قَد قيلَت فَلَم أَلتَفِت لَها

وَما الكَلِمُ العُورانُ لي بِقَبيلِ

Though slandered, I paid no heed,

for insults do not make me bleed.

وَأُعرِضُ عَن مَولايَ لَو شِئتُ سَبَّني

وَما كُلَّ حينٍ حِلمُهُ بأَصيلِ

I could spurn my patron if I wished,

though his mercy is not always relished.

وَما أَنا لِلشَيءِ الَّذي لَيسَ نافِعي

وَيَغضَبُ مِنهُ صاحِبي بِقَوولِ

Of no use is he who brings me harm,

vexing my friend with word and charm.

وَلضستُ بِلاقي المَرءِ أَزعُمُ أَنَّهُ

خَليلٌ وَما قَلبي لَهُ بِخَليلِ

When meeting a man I feign he's a brother,

while my heart finds no true other.
