1. Your love has seized me by the upper arm,

    and my need of you has enriched both my hands.

  2. O you who are my companions where I have none,

    and my solace where no solace is mine.

  3. Amid you, my torment and patient endurance have grown sweet;

    it has wrung the entrails within me—what a wringing!

  4. You wished to cauterize my enamored heart,

    so it was seared by you with a searing—what a searing!

  5. Thus you decreed for me a weary heart—

    how strange! How can the body be quenched by cautery?

  6. You know best what lies within my breast,

    over which my ribs have folded—what an enfolding!

  7. Do whatever you will, for truly

    every deed of yours is sweet to me.

  8. And when a censor, given to blame, rebuked me harshly,

    saying, “Your love for them was error,”

  9. I said, “Enough—leave me! For had they

    granted me love, I would not be alive.”

  10. They are my heart and my life, just as

    they are my hearing and the sight of my eyes.

  11. O my healers, wherever you are, there am I;

    you transcend any resemblance to a thing.

  12. Then lift the veil from my heart’s eye,

    and root out the deafness in both my ears,

  13. that I may behold something of that beauty

    before which thoughts stand helpless and speechless;

  14. and may my ear apprehend the way toward you, though

    I have aspired to a station hard for me to attain.

  15. Then may I receive from you a favor that clothes me,

    beneath the layers of earth, in the fairest garb—

  16. by the Chosen Hashemite Prophet,

    the best of God’s creation, of Qusayy’s house.
