لِسَاعدِ هذا الدّهر أنت أَصَابِعُ

وأنتَ لأمر المُلْكِ خَتْمٌ وطَابِعُ

You are the fingers that aid this age

You imprint and validate royal decree

وفي كلّ مُلْكٍ مَنْ يسوس شؤونَه

ولكِن عن الماضي يجلّ المضارع

And in every kingdom one who steers its helm

Yet only the future makes light of the past

وفي الفَلَكِ السّامي كواكبُ جمّةٌ

وأَنَّى يضاهي الشّمسَ في الأُفْقِ طالِعُ

In the sublime celestial sphere are clustered stars

Whence can match the sun's rising in the horizon?

أيا نورَ عَيْنِ الدّهر فالدّهرُ مُبْصِرٌ

وَمَسْمَعَ جِسْمِ الدّهر فالدّهر سامع

O light of the age's eye - and the age sees clear

And hearing of the age's body - and the age hears

حَلَلْتَ سماواتِ العُلَى فطويتَها

وإلاّ فممّا أنت في الجوّ ساطع

You unlocked the highest heavens and folded them

Else you glow in the firmament, don't you?

وما جئتَ إِقْبالاً بعزٍّ وإنّما

أتاك ليُلقى العزُّ إذْ أنت رافع

You came not with glory but glory came to you

For you held it high as it fell into your clasp

وما جاء إنْفَاساً بِغَيْرِ مَحَلِّه

ولكنّ فَرْعَ الشّيء للشّيء راجع

No breath comes but to its fated place

Yet a branch will to its origin return

وأيّ كمالٍ يبتغى فيه كاملٌ

وأيّ جَداً يُبْغَى من النّاس نافع

What perfection can a perfect being seek?

What seriousness can people wish to gain?

فتًى نشر الإِحسانَ وابلُ جودِه

فقام ونُطْقُ الجودِ بالشّكر صادع

A youth who sowed benevolence and clouds that poured generosity

He stood up and generosity's utterance loudly hailed

فأَنْبَتَ في الآفاقِ حمداً مُخَلّداً

ومجداً عن الأصحاب يرويه تابع

So he raised in the horizons lasting praise

And glory that disciples hand down through generations

عَلاَمَ قَتَلْتَ البخلَ جوداً وأهلُه

على سقمه الماضي الجفون دوامع

What killed miserliness, munificence and its people?

Their heavy-lidded eyes are now wide open

كما نهكَتْ علياك عَلْيَاءَ حَاسِدٍ

فأصبح ملسوعاً وقدرُك لاسعُ

Just as the arrogance of an envier wore you down

And now his hide is thick and your renown flies high

على أنّ ما فوق البسيطة ساجدٌ

إليك وما فيها لغيرك راكع

Moreover beyond the heavens lies one prostrate before you

And all in it save you bow down kneeling

وما حَسَدَ الأعداءُ شيئاً يَرَوْنَهُ

ورُبَّ عدوٍّ فيه للحقّ وَازعُ

No enemy envied a thing he saw

And how many a foe contends for truth

وقد بَرَزَتْ للمُلك منك عزائمٌ

عَلِمْنَا بِأنَّ السّعدَ للنّحس قامع

For rule, strong resolutions rose in you

We know luck shines on the unlucky

وأَمَّكَ بالإِقبال في الحُسْنِ مَنْ له

إمَامَتُهُمْ في الدّين إذْ أنت جامع

And who leads them in religion made your rising star

Ascendant - for you unite and bind all

فلِلّه خاقانٌ يرى بفؤاده

يُسَوِّفُ ما يأتي كما هو واقع

So God looked with his heart's eye

And saw what will happen as it will

رأى أنّ للإِصلاح فيك شمائلاً

فألْفاكَ لا يدنو إليك مضارع

He saw reform had traits in you

So matched you - none contends or rivals you

وغير غريبٍ أن يصيب بِرَأْيِهِ

أميرٌ لِثّدْيِ الرأي والعلم راضعُ

Expected that an Amir's judgment hits

The core - obedient to knowledge, bowing before reason's breast

وللفرع بالأصل ابتداءٌ وحيثما

تكامل أصلُ المرء فالمرء تَابِعُ

For branch originates in origin - so everywhere

A man's origin perfects, the man a sequent flows

وَدُمْ أنتَ في وجه السّعادة طالعاً

ودُرُّك من نحر الخلافة لامع

You rose ascending on fortune's face

Your essence from the caliphate's neck shining
