أَتُرى مُمْرِضي درى بِسقامي
فهي إن تُرْضِهِ أعزُّ مرامِي
Do my nurses know my illness?
If they cure me, that is my dearest wish.
ما عدا هجرَه فأجناد صبري
ما استطاعت لحملها من قيام
Other than being abandoned by you, nothing
Could break my patience and perseverance.
أيّها الهاجر وإن كنتَ أهلا
أين حِلم النّهى وصفحُ الكِرَام
O you who left! Though you were so dear,
Where is the forebearance and forgiveness of the generous?
كيف يا سيّدي وأنتَ مُرادي
وعلى مَنْ سِوَاكَ ألف سلام
My master, how could you, when you are my beloved,
And peace be upon all others but you?
كيف أذللتَ بالجفاء مُحِبّاً
لك في قلبه أعزّ مقَامِ
How could you spurn a lover
For whom you were the most precious refuge?
صار يهوى من بعد طول ائْتِلاَفٍ
لك وَصْلاً ولو بطيْف منام
He who after long companionship with you
Yearns for even a glimpse of you in a dream!
آهِ ألفا على ليالٍ تقضّت
نظّمَتْ شَملَنا بأيّ انتظام
Alas, for nights that have passed,
That bound us in intimate embrace!
حيث فاس قرارُنا وهي دارٌ
ما لِدَارٍ في حُسْنِهَا من نظام
In Fez was our dwelling, a house
Whose beauty has no equal.
ما لِمِصْرَ ولا لبغدادَ معنىً
مشبهٌ لا ولا العراقِ وشامِ
Egypt and Baghdad cannot compare,
Nor Syria and Iraq.
أيُّ سرٍّ فيها وأيُّ سُرورٍ
قد قطفنا وأيّ شرب مُدَام
What secrets and delights we shared,
What wine we quaffed!
أي معنىً وأي لُطْفٍ وظَرْفٍ
وغرامٍ يُهَاجُ بالأنغام
What pleasures, wit, and love
Made tender by melody!
والإمامُ التجاني أحمدُ فينا
داعياً بالهُدى لدار السّلام
And in our midst Imam Al-Tijani Ahmed
Calling us with guidance to the Abode of Peace,
يُسْرِجُ النّورَ في القلوب ويمحو
بمياه الغيوب كُلَّ ظلام
Shedding light in hearts and blotting out
With waves of mysteries all darkness,
يسكُبُ السرَّ في سرائر قوم
أصبحوا بالوِصَال سكرى غرام
Pouring secrets into the breasts of a people
Intoxicated by the wine of passion,
ذاك فانٍ في اللّه حُبّاً وهذا
في جمالِ النبيءِ بَدْرُ التّمام
This one perishing in the love of God,
That one the full moon of the Prophet's beauty.
يا نفوساً دُكَّتْ لقهر التجلّي
يا عقولاً خَرَّتْ لِلُطْفِ الكلام
O souls confounded by theophany's assault!
O minds bowing before the grace of words!
مَدَدٌ مَدَّهُمْ به الشيخ جوداً
إنّ جودَ التّجاني في الكون هام
The Shaykh revived them with his bounty―
Truly, Al-Tijani's munificence fills the cosmos.
كيف لا والهُمَامُ أحمدُ قُطْبٌ
ما له في المقام قطبٌ مُسَامِ
How not, when Ahmed is the pole,
With no rival in his spiritual station!
خاتَمٌ خصّه الإله بفضل
وعطايا من المزايا عِظام
The last seal, graced by God with virtue
And magnificent miracles,
دُونَها تنتهي النّهى لِعُلُوٍّ
وارتقاء من مُدْرَك الأفهام
Beyond which the beauties end, for their loftiness,
And discernment's reach finds their limit.
هكذا أنبأَ النّبيءُ فَصَدِّقْ
أو تَهَيَّأْ لرشقةٍ من سهام
So spoke the Prophet―believe!
Or prepare yourself for arrows' flight
إنْ تَقُل كيف ذاك وهو أخيرٌ
هل يفوق المَأْمُومُ قَدْرَ إِمَامِ
If you say "How so?" though he was the last.
Can the led surpass his imam's worth?
قُلْت فاق النبيءُ وهو أخيرٌ
كلَّ ذي رتبةٍ سَمَتْ في الأنام
I say the Prophet surpassed, though the last,
Every ranked one, however high among men.
ليس للقدرة القديمة عجزٌ
وكذا الفضلُ لم يزل في انسجام
For primordial power knows no lack,
Even as grace continues in harmony.
خِلّ وَصْفَ النبيءِ فهو مُحَالٌ
والسّوى جائزٌ بغير ملام
Leave off describing the Prophet―it is beyond you.
Judging otherwise merits no blame.
ليس من حقّك الجِدالُ ولكن
أن تكون الجفون منك دوامي
'Tis not your place to argue, rather
That your eyes be ever tearful.
حيث لم تكتحل بنور اهتداءٍ
كَيْ ترى الشّمسَ ما لها من غمام
For never has the collyrium of guidance
Anointed them that you might see the sun despite clouds.
لا تُجَادِلْ في الأولياء وسَلِّم
قبل توتير قَوْسِ يدّ رَامِ
Dispute not over saints, and submit
Ere the bowstring of a fierce archer is drawn taut!
بَشِّرِ الخائضين فيهم بحربٍ
من قويّ في بطشه ذي انتقام
Give glad tidings to those warring with them
Of a strong Lord terrible in vengeance.
رَبّ إنّي صَدَّقْتُ كلَّ وَلِيّ
راعياً قَدْرَهم بعين احترام
Lord, I believe each saint
While respecting their station with care.
غَيْرَ أنّ ابنَ سالمٍ هو شيخي
وملاذي وعُمْدَتي وإمامي
But the son of Salim is my master,
My refuge, pillar, and imam.
في هواه المطاعِ طاوعت عيني
وعلى بابه ضربت خيامي
Loving him I inclined my eyes in obedience,
And before his door pitched my tent.
إنْ يَكُنْ راضياً فذلك فوزي
بجميع الْمُنَى وحُسْنِ الخِتَام
If he consent, that is my pride,
The sum of all I wish and the perfection of conclusion.
