1. Death is no laggard pursuer,

    O sleeper in the guise of one awake.

  2. So remember your passage to the dust, all alone;

    This is a sight that plainly admonishes humankind,

  3. After ease of living and companionship,

    And lofty standing—what a standing!

  4. So have mercy on your youth or your gray hairs through piety,

    For it is what endures despite time's vicissitudes.

  5. And make yours the path of the noble, most virtuous man who

    Left praise to be recited by every tongue:

  6. The pride of the Gharabila among humankind,

    Their Mahmud, endowed with virtue and beneficence.

  7. He added lofty virtues to what he possessed of

    Honor; thereby both honors were rightly his.

  8. Then he answered his Lord when called

    By his summoner, obedient and at peace.

  9. So whenever you visit, offer this prayer as a chronogram:

    “Lodge him in the best of dwellings, at ease.”
