1. O my heart, how you love torment!

    If you seek union with him, he recoils;

  2. He withheld himself, and thereby wasted my body away,

    And visited only to afflict me with sleeplessness.

  3. If only you could behold his forelock—

    Hearing is not like seeing with one’s own eyes.

  4. I never thought that daybreak

    Could turn desire aside when tresses meet the eye;

  5. Yet the lover’s sorrow and anguish deepen with

    Tears flowing from the heart’s molten core.

  6. So I wander, lovestruck, whenever a zephyr passes—

    The breeze for which lovers yearn before dawn.

  7. It stirs the heart to longing—and no wonder:

    A flash of lightning traveled by night from the quarter of al-Khayf,

  8. Bestowing fertility on the valley at dawn,

    And adorning the gathering whenever it appeared.

  9. And when the goblet comes into view, it reveals to you

    A lip like dawn when it breaks into light.
