يا جامعاً بين شمل العلم والعمل

عادت عليه بنا الأيام في جذل

O you who brings together knowledge and action

The days have turned against us out of stinginess

واستعذب الدهر ورداً من علاك به

فصار عيداً عليه نشوة الثمل

And time has made drinking your love pleasant

So being drunk on you has become a celebration

وماس عصرك تيهاً أن زينته

مناقب لك في جيد الزمان حلي

Your era was lost in misguidance though

Your virtues in the best of times are its adornment

بك الزمان ربيع في شقائقه

حسناً فما أنت إلا الشمس في الحمل

Through you, time is spring in its meadows

For you are none other than the sun in Aries

أحلك المجد دون الناس مقلته

وأنت في عينه الإنسان في المقل

Glory singled you out above all people

And in their eyes, you are the exemplar of men

تؤمك الناس في قصدي هدى وندى

ولا ترى منك كلا وحشة الملل

People come to you seeking guidance and bounty

You see no boredom or emptiness from them

فتنثني عن حياض منك مترعةً

بالقصد ما بين ورد العل والنهل

So you turn away from your overflowing basin

With purpose between the roses of knowledge and wisdom

لبست من كل علم ثوب بهجته

غضاً وغيرك منه مصة الوشل

You wore the robe of rejoice of every knowledge

While others were clothed in the rags of ignorance

ما نهنهتك بحار عن لئالئها

غوصاً تصرف منه حامل الرمل

The oceans’ pearls did not distract you

From diving in them, filtering the carrier of sands

ولا تجردن للتجريد في نظر

إلا أصبت برأي منك معتدل

You don’t stick to esotericism in your vision

Except to obtain from your view a balanced perspective

ولا شرحت من التشريح أشكله

إلا وأوضحت منه غامض الجمل

You don’t explain the complex

Except to clarify the ambiguous whole

ولا أمد لك الرحمن نعمته

إلا مددت إليك كف مبتهل

Whenever the Merciful grants you blessings

You extend to Him a hand praying

وخاطبتك العقول العشر مصدرها

وسالمتك بجاش منك منذهل

Minds flock to you as their source

And are awed into silence by your overflowing rain

وزادك اللَه من ألطافه نعماً

في دولة غيرت في أوجه الدول

May God increase the favors upon you

In a state that changed the aspects of power

في دولة حكم داود لها رصد

يصونها عن هوى الأوغاد والسفل

In a state whose rule is like David’s

Protecting it from the whims of the vulgar and lowly

حتى أفاض عليها من غلائله

عزاً وزر عليها حلية الحلل

Until He unleashed from His abundance

Honor that adorned it with splendid attire

إن الخلافة فيه افتر مبسمها

عن بهجة بسرور فيه متصل

In it the Caliphate blossomed into a smile

Of joy and happiness in continuity

هوته بكر العلى حتى تبعلها

والناس عن طلب العلياء في شغل

He brought virtue to its peak until it yielded to him

While people were busy seeking the sublime

إذا استغاث به العافي يروضه

بواكف من كلا كفيه منهمل

When the weak cry out to him, he tames them

With palms that gently caress and console

فأصبح الدهر يسعى طوع راحته

كالنصر مسعى غلام مشفق عجل

So time walks happily at its leisure

Like victory, the pace of a caring, swift boy

ورب منتحل أمراً يعاكسه

واللَه مبطل دعوى كل منتحل

How many false claimants oppose him

Yet God renders vain the claims of every pretender

نهاه بالصفح فامتد الغرور به

إلا ببيض صفاح أو قنا ذبل

He forbade him with clemency, so arrogance grew in him

Save for the striking of a white hand or a withering palm

فصال والنصر حاديه وقائده

على جنود تمد الحرب بالحيل

So he triumphed with victory as his guide

Against armies who use craftiness in war

في فيلق أسفرت عنه بوارقه

بعثير كظلام الليل منسدل

Against a troop whose banners

Were cast down like the darkness of night

أطل فارتعدت منه فرائصها

رعباً أعارته قلب الخائف الوجل

It appeared so its prey shuddered in fright

A terror that shook the hearts of the anxious

أخنى عليها فلم تألف مساكنها

إلا ندى الطل أو إلا صدى الطلل

It waged war on them, so they were uneasy in their dwellings

Except the dew at dawn or the sound of turtledoves

وفل منها جموعاً وهي شامخةً

بلهذم ألحق الأشلاء بالشلل

It scattered their crowds as they stood tall

Severing joints and adding to disabilities

تهافتت في شعاع السيف فاحترقت

مثل الفراش مناياها على الشعل

They perished in the flash of the sword aflame

Like moths, their lives extinguished by the blaze

وكلما شب نار الحرب موقدها

سعى لها غير رعديد ولا فشل

Whenever the fire of war flares

He strives without fatigue or frustration

لو مواضٍ وزرق قط ما وجدت

إلا دم القلب يرويها عن الغلل

If examined, you would not find

Except the blood of sincerity to quench its thirst

فعش بظل نعيم من صداقته

فيض يدوم وظل غير منتقل

Live in the shade of the blessing of his friendship

An outpouring that lasts like a lasting shade

بم اعتذار أناسٍ عن غوايتها

ومنهج الحق للمسترشدين جلي

Why do some apologize for their misguidance

When the path of truth is clear to seekers

ظلت أدلتها من ذا تقدمه

والحق ما دار إلا حيث دار علي

Its proofs have preceded whoever puts them forth

And truth revolves wherever Ali revolves

ومن يضاهي علياً حيث ما التبست

بهماء حكم ولج الخصم في الجدل

Who can match Ali wherever matters become obscured

By the haze of judgment and dispute flares

وثورت فتن الأيام عثيره

وزلزل الأرض وقع الحادث الجلل

When the tumults of time erupted

And the earth quaked from the tremors

خطيب قومٍ إذا أصغى الندي غدت

له شقاشق فيها رعدة الزجل

Orator of a people, when the call was raised

Sparks burst forth in him like the zeal of warriors

تفجرت فيه عين الصمت عن حكمٍ

وفي الأنام أفيضت وصمة الخطل

In him the spring of silence burst open with wisdom

And deficiency spilled into the people

وموهم أنه مستودع حكماً

وأنه لا مور المسلمين ولي

Deceiving them that he possessed judgment

Though he is not the trustee of Muslim affairs

وباذل لفضاء الحكم خاتمه

جهلاً وفي نشر سر الكائنات ملي

He sacrificed the ring of authority in vain

Ignorant in comprehending the secret of existence

رام التحلي بها جهلاً بفطرته

وهل تسوغ لانثنى حلية الرجل

He improperly adorned himself with it in ignorance

Can a curved one wear the collar of a man?

واستطعم النحل مما تجتني فجنى

لسعاً وغدذتك منها شهدة العسل

He asked the bees for what they harvest, so he harvested

A sting while you reap only honey from them

ليت الأكف التي أومت أناملها

إلى سواك رماها اللَه بالشلل

If only the hands that extended their fingers

To you, may God paralyze them

بلغتهم أملاً في كل ما اقترحوا

وإن غيرك مما يأملون خلي

Reached their hopes in all they proposed

While none but you is hoped for

واستعطفوك لصفح عن جنايتهم

حتى صفحت وهذا غاية الأمل

And beseeched you to pardon their crimes

Until you pardoned, which is the utmost hope

وما كفى الصفح حتى زدتهم كرماً

من فيض كفك فيض العارض الهطل

Pardoning was not enough until you further graced them

From your palm’s pouring like pouring rain

لا تحسبن خضاباً في عوارضها

لكنه أثر من حمرة الخجل

Do not think it dyed their expressions

Rather it is a sign of redness of shame

وقد يكون دوام الصفح مفسدةً

فامزج فديتك صفو الجد بالهزل

And unending pardon may lead to corruption

So mix, my sacrifice, the severity of earnestness with jest

وعالجن نفاقاً في ضمائرها

بلفتة منك تبري كامن العلل

And address the hypocrisy in their consciences

With a hint from you that exposes latent diseases

واجدع بعضبك آنافاً شمخن على

عداك من جهل مفتون بها خطل

And rebuke with your anger the noses that defied

You out of ignorance, infatuated with error
