1. أنيخت لهم عند الطفوف ركاب

    وناداهم داعي القضا فأجابوا

    I hurried them at dawn when the riders embarked

    And the caller of destiny called, so they responded

  2. ولما استطابوا من سما الحرب نقعها

    أثارته شيب منهم وشباب

    When they had their fill of the exquisite drink of war

    It aroused in them both gray hair and youth

  3. يقودون للحرب العوان شوزباً

    لها بين أرجاء الفضاء هباب

    They lead the helpers to war enthusiastic

    With such zeal that filled the sky's expanse

  4. تقل عليها من لوي فوارس

    شداد على وقع النصال صلاب

    Bearing polished swords that clanged

    Against shields - strong and brave lads

  5. لقد شغفوا بالبيض وهي صوارم

    وفي نغم الشادين وهو ضراب

    Passionate for white blades and scimitars

    To the rhythm of drums - beating, pounding

  6. لهم حسب زاكي الفخار وهاشم

    لهم نسب لا عامر وكلاب

    They have the honor of Zaki and Hashim

    And descent from Lamer and Kalab noble clans

  7. مواضٍ مواضٍ قد تحلوا بمثلها

    أسود لها زرق الأسنة غاب

    Battle positions, battle lines formed by the likes of them

    Lions with tongues as blue as the darkest of nights

  8. ينيلون من قد نال منهم فلا يرى

    لهم بسوى الرقد العميم عقاب

    Their spears pierce kidneys as if

    Seeking the hearts' deepest hopes and yearnings

  9. وثابتٍ إلى نصر ابن بنت نبيها

    ضراغم غيل في الهياج غضاب

    And steadfast towards the victory of the son

    Of the Prophet's daughter, angry in the fray's tumult

  10. هوىً لثواب اللَه منهم وطالما

    إلى كل ما فيه الإثابة ثابوا

    Yearning for God's reward, and for so long

    Rushing to every noble, righteous deed

  11. إذا ظمئ الخطي في حومة الوغى

    فليس سوء ماء القلوب شارب

    When the excited swordsman thirsts in battle's heat

    Only the drink of courage quenches his thirst

  12. وإن جانب الهندي في الحرب غمده

    فما الغمد إلا هامة ورقاب

    If the Indian in war sheaths his sword

    The sheath is but necks and heads

  13. كأن قناهم وهي تخترق الكلى

    لها بين أفلاذ الضمير طلاب

    Their spears piercing kidneys as if

    Piercing the conscience's innermost thoughts

  14. إلى أن هووا فوق الثرى فتسنمت

    عليهم من المجد العريق قباب

    Until they fell dead atop the dirt and were shaded

    By the canopy of glorious eternal fame

  15. بنفسي بدوراً بالنواويس أشرقت

    علاها وحاشاها الأفول فغابوا

    By my soul that shone with beacons in the dark

    Radiant, beyond the reach of sunset's veil

  16. وجاءت بنو حرب تخوف أصيداً

    من الموت ضلوا في السبيل فخابوا

    The Banu Harb came frightening prey

    Lost on the path, failing in their goal

  17. رأوا أنه يعطي الدنية خشية ال

    منية كلا إن ذاك سراب

    They saw surrendering to death's inevitability

    As disgrace - but that, my friends, is a mirage

  18. فديت الذي يستعطف القوم عتبه

    وكيف وهل يثني العتات عتاب

    I ransom with my soul the one who pleads with the proud

    But can remorse soften their hardened hearts?

  19. ويقرع بالوعظ الجميل مسامعاً

    وهل يسمع العجم الرعاع خطاب

    He calls to them with kind words but will

    These brutes comprehend an articulate sermon?

  20. يناديهم هل من نصير فلم يكن

    سوى السمر والبيض الرقاق جواب

    "Is there a helper?" he calls but hears

    Only the swishing of unsheathed blades in reply

  21. فجر عليهم من كتائب عزمه

    كتائب حربٍ دونهن حراب

    So he unleashed on them from his army's flanks

    Regiments of war, before which all swords are humbled

  22. وأذكى لظى الهيجا عليهم وقد غدا

    على الشمس من نسج العجاج حجاب

    And unleashed the flames of battle upon them, as

    A veil of interwoven iron envelops the sun

  23. وسامهم عضب الشبا فكأنهم

    فراش ومصقول الفريد شهاب

    Marking them with the wrath of youths, as if they were

    Butterflies, scorched by a brilliant meteor's flames

  24. كأن لعينيه المواضي خرائد

    لها من دماء الدارعين خضاب

    As if his eyes made the valleys prey

    Dyed red with the blood of armored men

  25. إلى أن دنا ما حتمته يد القضا

    وما خطه في العلمين كتاب

    Until what destiny's hand had decreed came to pass

    Written on the Guarded Tablet by God's pen

  26. فخر على وجه الثرى علة الورى

    فله خطب قدر عرا ومصاب

    He fell to the earth, affliction of all creation

    Greatness of ordeal, heaviness of tragedy

  27. بنفسي عارٍ بالعراء وللعدى

    ذهاب على جثمانه وإياب

    By my soul shamefully wandering the barren wasteland

    Going back and forth by his lifeless body

  28. كرائمه للظالمين غينمةً

    وأمواله للناهبين نهاب

    His noble souls are spoils for the unjust

    And his wealth is plunder for usurpers
