هنيئاً فقد نارت لنا أنجم السعد

فأوضحن ما يخفي الحبيب وما يبدي

Good tidings, for the stars of fortune have shone upon us,

Making clear what the beloved conceals and what he reveals.

وهل كان ذو ودٍ كتوماً لسره

ولكنه لولم يكن ما ذق الود

Was there ever a loving friend who kept his secret hidden?

Yet had he not loved, he'd never have tasted affection.

سقى الدار دار العامرية حالك

أجش ملث ذو حياً خارق الحد

It watered the Abode, Dar Al-Aamiriyya, your condition,

A torrential rain whose downpour exceeds all bounds.

ديار لغادي الريح عيث بوردها

إذا هب من نجد فآهاً على نجد

A home where the wind roams and ravages its roses,

When it blows in from Najd - alas for Najd!

وأصانها طوراً تصيخ كأنها

أخو صبوةٍ أصغي لذكرى هوى هند

For a time it sheltered it, quivering as if

It were a youthful gazelle listening to the memory of his love for India.

وتهتز طوراً كالنشاوي بخمرة

أهاجت عليهم كامن الشوق والوجد

And it sways at times like drunkards with a wine

That ignited in them the embers of passion and ardour.

رعى اللَه من قد أسلم الصب للهوى

وخلف قلباً دائم الخلد في الوقد

May God shepherd those who surrendered their passions to love

And left behind hearts everlasting in their fervour.

أهيم إذا جرت علي جحافل

من الليل سدت لي المناهج بالجند

I wander about when the legions of night descend upon me,

Blocking my paths with their armies.

أبا الحق أن تروي العيون من الكرى

وعيني عبرى وهي دائمة السهد

O Abul Haqq, it would please the eyes to be sated of sorrow,

Yet my eyes are tearful and ever wakeful.

سألتك قل لي ما يضرك أن تزر

معنىً ولو طيفاً وإن كان لا يجدي

I asked you to tell me - what harm is there in visiting

Meaning, even if ephemeral, though it brings no remedy?

وفاتكة العينين قتالة الهوى

موردة الخدين مائسة القد

For your two slaying, passionate eyes,

Your rosy cheeks, your curvy waist.

إذا أسفرت أبدت نهاراً بوجهها

وتسلخه أن أرسلت فاحم الجعد

When day breaks, it reveals by its face a radiant morn,

But night pulls it back with its black tresses.

تعاني بالوعد والشوق لم يزل

ينازعني في أن أعيش إلى الوعد

It suffers from promises and longing that still

Struggles with me to live unto the promise.

فليس لنا إلا التمني بوصلها

إذا حضرتني صرت في جنة الخلد

For us there is nothing left but to wish for her presence -

When she comes to me, I'm in the gardens of eternity.

ويا صحبي اليوم مراً بدمنة

غدت عند أرباب الهوى غاية القصد

And O my friends, today we passed by a settlement

That for love's followers is the ultimate goal.

بنفسي غزالاً في رباها عهدته

رماني بسهمي مقلتيه على عمد

I pledged my soul, a gazelle in her sanctuary,

And she struck me with my own arrow, deliberately.

سقاني عقاراً أشبهت طعم ريقه

وتحكي لما في جنتيه من الورد

She gave me a potion whose taste resembled her saliva,

And she tells of the roses in her two gardens.

وجوه القوم أورثوا الجود والتقى

وعند الوغى يوم الكريهة كالأسد

The people's faces inspired generosity and piety,

And in times of calamity, they are like lions.

فسيماهم عند التقى في وجوههم

وعند الندى والمجد من كثرة الرفد

So their mark in times of generosity is on their faces,

And in times of bounty and glory, from abundant provision.

خليلي هلا جئتما لتهنيا

أخا المجد لا بل قطب دائرة المجد

My friend, why don't you both come to congratulate

The brother of glory - no - the axis of the circle of glory?

تقي كريم يخجل السحب كفه

نقي سليم منذ قد كان في المهد

A pious, generous man who shames the clouds with his palm,

A pure, perfect soul since the day he was in the cradle.

نغرس حبيبي وابن عمي وموئلي

وتاج فخاري مدة اللَه بالعقد

We plant, my beloved friend and cousin, my shelter,

The crown of my pride - may God prolong his reign.

فعوجا على تلك الديار وجددا

عهودي وإن لم ترعيا ذمة العهد

So visit those abodes and renew

My pacts, even if they do not keep to the pact.
