1. يا دهر حتى أنت ملت عمادا

    وسلبت حتى من هداك رشادا

    O fate, even you have grown weary of pillars

    And robbed even your guided ones of guidance

  2. زعزعت شاهقها الذي رجت له

    الأرضون فانهالت ربي ووهادا

    You shook its towering one, for whom

    The lands had hoped, and they collapsed as hills collapsed

  3. وحشدت ما بين الفضا زمر القضا

    جنداً أخفت لنصره الأجنادا

    And you summoned between the space the troops of destiny

    An army whose helpers you had concealed

  4. فلأنت أقصر ساعداً لو لم يكن

    لبى لداعي ربه إذا نادى

    So you would be too short of arm should he not

    Respond to his Lord's call when He called

  5. وفتكت في نواب آل محمد

    فارتاد صرفك جمعهم وأبادا

    And you wreaked havoc on the deputies of the house of Muhammad

    So your twists and turns exhausted and destroyed them

  6. حتى ارتقيت محجة الإسلام والدا

    عي الأنام إلى الهدى إرشادا

    Until you climbed the stronghold of Islam and belief

    The guide of mankind to guidance

  7. كافي المروعة كافلاً أيتامها

    كاليب الشريعة أن تمل عمادا

    Sufficient in his awe-inspiringness, protecting its orphans

    Like the beasts of prey protecting the law's pillars lest they weaken

  8. مصباح شرعتها صباح رشادها

    وأمينها والجهبذ النقادا

    The lamp of its laws, the torch of its guidance

    And its trustee, the formidable critic

  9. من ينجح الآمال من تزكو به

    الأعمال من عهدت يداه عهادا

    The one by whom hopes succeed, by whom

    Deeds are purified, whose hands were entrusted with covenants

  10. جلل أطل على العراق فأرجف

    الأقطار منه بوادياً وبلادا

    He shone over Iraq, so its regions

    Shook, its valleys and lands

  11. بل عطل الأفلاك وانزعجت له

    الأملاك بل عرش المهيمن مادا

    Nay, he halted the celestial spheres, and the angels

    Were upset; nay, the Throne of the All-Powerful leaned

  12. يا ظاعناً عنا وأمسى قبره

    منا حشى ملسوعة وفؤادا

    Oh missing from us, and his grave

    Became stuffed among us, wrenching hearts

  13. أفلا بقيت لنا مناراً بهجة

    عزاً جمالاً هيبة إسعادا

    Would that you had remained for us a minaret, a joy

    Glory, beauty, awe, prosperity

  14. ورزية أزجى طلائعها الردى

    إذ أنت بين المسلمين تهادى

    And the misfortune, at the fore of which was demise,

    When you moved among the Muslims softly

  15. فارتعت من خول النوى لكنني

    أخلدت فيك إلى البقا إخلادا

    So it crept in the folds of determination, but I

    Have immortalized you into eternity

  16. من ذا يرد الخطب من نسقي به

    في الجدب من نرجو به الإمدادا

    Who can ward off calamities? From whom do we hope

    For aid when called? Who upholds the pillars?

  17. من ذا يجيب ندا اللهيف ويؤمن

    الداعي المخيف ويعضد الأعضادا

    Who answers the cry of the desperate and secures

    The fearful supplicant and supports the weary?

  18. من ذا نكيد به الزمان وصرفه

    إن كاد أو من يسعف الأنكادا

    Who can trick fate and change its course

    When it schemes, or aid the schemed against?

  19. من ذا يعيد علي أياماً مضت

    عدت بسعدك كلها أعيادا

    Who can restore days past

    That have gone with your bliss, all festivals?

  20. حسدتني الأيام فيك فما عسى

    عذري إذا أشمت بي الحسادا

    The days envied me for you, so what can

    Excuse me if the envious gloat?

  21. بلغتني ما رمت منك سوى البقا

    ما ضر لو بلغتنيه مرادا

    You reached me with only eternity—would that

    You had reached me with all I desired!

  22. أفرشتني بعد المهاد قتادا

    ومنحتني بدل الرقاد سهادا

    You laid me down after the death pallets

    And granted me instead of cushions, biers

  23. ولقد رأيتك والأكف تزاحمت

    في رفع نعش أنت فيه منادى

    And I saw you, hands jostling

    To lift up the bier that you were calling to

  24. وأراملاً وفضائلاً وفواضلا

    تنعى ثواكل خلفه منادى

    And widows, virtuous women, and excellent ladies

    Mourning the loved ones left behind calling

  25. فدهشت مسلوب الحجا ذاوي الرجا

    يوري الجوى بين الضلوع زنادا

    I was shocked, deprived of my senses, my hopeful heart

    Revealing its remorse between ribs, a fire starter

  26. حجبوك عن عيني إلى أن صيروا

    يوم الرحيل حجابك الإلحادا

    They hid you from my eyes until they made

    The day of departure a veil of atheism

  27. ينعاك منبرك الذي استبدلت عن

    أعواده من نعشك الأعوادا

    Your pulpit—for which they substituted

    Planks from your bier—mourns you

  28. ومعاشر من بحر علمك أو ردوا

    شرعاً غدوا يترشفون ثمادا

    And circles who drew legal knowledge from your sea, returning

    At dawn to draw your dew

  29. وجواهر الكلم التي حليتها

    سرعان ما لبست عليك حدادا

    And the pearls of speech which you adorned

    Swiftly put on mourning clothes for you

  30. ينهي مآثرك الكريمة من يرى

    بعداده أن ينهي الأعدادا

    He who sees the extent of your generous deeds

    Despairs of enumerating the enumerations

  31. لي فيك دمع لا يجف كأنما

    أمست له السبع البحار مدادا

    For you I have a tear that does not dry, as though

    The seven seas had become its inkwell

  32. عذيتني ثمر العلوم فرائداً

    نثرت عليك من العيون فرادى

    You made me enjoy the prime fruits of sciences

    That eyes scattered over you one by one

  33. ولرب قائلةٍ ألا تسلو بلى

    أسلو ولكن سلوة ورقادا

    And there were saying, "Do not be consoled," but no,

    I will be consoled, but consoled with wakefulness

  34. بمن العزا وأنا المعزى في أب

    ما زال يوسعني هدى أرقادا

    With whom should I grieve when my father is

    The comforter, whose guidance ever widens my consolation?

  35. قالت بإبراهيم قلت أجل هو

    الكفو الكريم علا تقى وسدادا

    She said, Abraham; I said yes, he is

    The matchless, the generous, ascendant in piety and rectitude

  36. ذو همةٍ نهضت بأعباء العلى

    وسواه يضغف كفه الأنجادا

    The one of lofty resolve who bore the burdens

    Of the most high while others' hands weakened

  37. هو فرقد علماً وطود قد رسى

    حلماً وجوداً طوق الأجيادا

    He went to his rest a banner of knowledge, a towering mountain

    Forbearance and munificence belting the excellent

  38. جمعاً لعمر علاهما الفضل الذي

    لا ينتهي حداً ولا أفردا

    Gathering in his life superiority, the virtue that

    Has no limit or match

  39. وبمن توسمنا بهم سمة الهدى

    أحفاده أكرم بهم أحفادا

    And in his progeny of whom we augured the trait of guidance

    The most generous scions of ancestors

  40. ولنا سلو بالتقي العيلم

    المروي الورى الوراد والروادا

    And we are consoled by the God-fearing jurist

    Quenching souls, a spring for visitors and passersby

  41. العالم العلم الذي شهدت له

    آثاره وكفى بها أشهادا

    The scholar, the science that his traces

    Attested, and they suffice as testifiers

  42. وسقى ضريحك وابل الرضوان لا

    يعدوه إبراقاً ولا أرعادا

    And the rain of approval waters your tomb, not

    Pouring or flooding it
