1. حيِّي الحيا معهدنا باللِّوى

    حيث هوى النَّفس وغيُّ الصِّبا

    Our institute was revived by the mountains,

    Where the soul inclined and the youth blew.

  2. وجاده كلُّ هَطولٍ سرت

    تحدو به في الأفق ريح الصِّبا

    Every downpour wandered freely,

    Blown by the winds roaming the horizons.

  3. ليلته حتى بدا صبحها

    فأقلعت ديمته فانجلى

    The night lasted until its dawn emerged,

    Its darkness disappeared and the light shone.

  4. وقد أشاع الخصب في أرضه

    فأصبحت تزهو بزهر الرُّبى

    Fertility spread through its land,

    It started blooming with meadow saffron.

  5. ومدَّ فيها حبراً وُشِّيت

    بالنَّبتِ قد كلِّل منها النَّدى

    Inks were spilled and adorned with plants,

    The dew crowning it from all directions.

  6. وغادر الغدران في ربعها

    تغصُّ بالعذب النَّمير الرَّوا

    The deceivers left its plains,

    Crowded with sweet and limpid water.

  7. ولا جفا نجداً ولا حاجراً

    كلُّ هزيم الودق هامى الحيا

    No roughness of stone or refusal of help,

    Every gentle breeze wandered alive.

  8. منازلاً واهاً لأيَّامها

    كانت مظنَّات الصِّبا والهوى

    Places of love for its days,

    Were expectations of youth and passion.

  9. حيث الأماني طوع آمالنا

    والسَّعد عبدٌ طائعٌ والمنى

    Where wishes were obedient to our hopes,

    And fortune was an obedient slave.

  10. لله أيامٌ تقضَّت لنا

    بين ذرى الجزع وسفح اللوى

    God had days that passed for us,

    Between the terrain of sorrow and the slopes of passion.

  11. ما كان أهنأ عيشها ليته

    دام وليت العمر فيه انقضى

    If only its livelihood stayed,

    Lasting, and if only life ended there.

  12. مرَّت كنجمٍ قد هوى ساقطاً

    لم يعتلقه الطَّرف حتى اختفى

    It passed like a star that fell,

    Before the eye glimpsed it, it disappeared.

  13. يا هل معيدٌ لي عيشاً بها

    هيهات لا يرجع شيءٌ مضى

    Oh, is there anyone to bring me that life back?

    Alas! Nothing that is gone will return.

  14. ليت ليالينا وأيامنا

    كانت لليلات ألالٍ فدا

    I wish our nights and days,

    Were for the nights of Laila and sacrifice.

  15. ويلاه من سرعة تفريقنا

    وشَتِّ شمل الحيِّ بعد النَّوى

    Oh what a quick separation,

    The gathering of loved ones scattered after farewell.

  16. وآه من وقفة تشييعهم

    وقد شرقنا كلُّنا بالبكا

    Oh, the standing at their procession,

    As we all cried in the east.

  17. وسارت العيس بأحداجهم

    واستودعوا فيها بدور الدُّجى

    The carriages went on their way,

    And they put them in the houses of condolences.

  18. من كلِّ هيفاء إذا ما بدت

    تختال أذرت بغصون النَّقا

    Whenever a gazelle showed,

    Adorned with bracelets and tree branches.

  19. خافقة القرطين رُعبوبةٍ

    رادِ الوشاحين أناةِ الخُطى

    A thrush with two earrings,

    Returning the veils, pacing slowly.

  20. رخيمة الدَّلِّ إذا ما بدت

    تسحر باللَّحظ عقول النُّهى

    A delicate doe, when she appeared,

    Charmed with a glance the minds of the rested.

  21. ما ظبية البان على حسنها

    إذا تبَّدى جيدها والطُّلا

    No oryx in her beauty,

    When her neck and new moon showed.

  22. وظبيِ إنسٍ زارني طارقاً

    والبدر لا يبديه إلا الدُّجى

    A human gazelle visited me at night,

    The full moon not showing him but darkness.

  23. بات يعاطي الرَّاح من ثغره

    ممزوجةً بالعسل المجتنى

    He spent the night flirting,

    Mixed with the extracted sweet honey.

  24. أشتمُّ من ريحان أصداغه

    وأجتني باللَّحظ ورد الحيا

    I smell the basil of his cheeks,

    And I am tempted by the glances and flowers of life.

  25. وأجتلي غصن قوامٍ له

    أهيَف يحكي بانة المنحنى

    I disclose a branch of his perfect stature,

    Swaying, telling of the bent slope.

  26. لهفي على عيش التَّصابي ويا

    آهة قلبي لزمان الصِّبا

    My passion for the life of youth, oh how

    My heart sighs for the time of youth.

  27. حيث الشَّباب الرَّوق يُغري بنا

    حفل الظِّبا الغرِّ وسرب المها

    Where the fancy youth enticed us,

    The gatherings of oryx and flock of deer.

  28. كانت عروس الدَّهر أيامنا

    طارت بها العنقاء نحو السَّما

    Our days were the bride of time,

    The she-camel carried them to the sky.
