O Night of Decree, renowned is your station!
By God, we failed to honor you at your true worth.
Alas—how much idleness and languor!
You turned heedlessly away, deluded one, from the Night of Decree,
While others stand at the Generous One’s door,
Communing with their Lord, on their feet until dawn.
Their faces shine with the radiance of sincerity;
Their light amid the night’s darkness is like the full moon.
How fair they are, while night lets down its wing,
And their tears stream like pouring rain.
Long have they stood at the Generous One’s door;
Whoever keeps to such doors shall attain goodness.
This, by your father, is true resolve—so act accordingly;
How ugly is neglect at the end of life!
The prime of youth has passed you by, and still you have not repented;
What safeguard have you prepared against the terror of the Gathering?
Awake! How long you have prolonged your sleep—stop now, for
Your nights are camel-litters bearing you toward the grave.
Truly, may I be your ransom, this world is only a temptation,
And its temptation is among the gravest burdens at the Gathering.
So leave it, and never trust the deceit of its cunning;
How many infatuated lovers has it repaid with treachery!
I have counseled you; hear the words of one who counsels,
Who calls you to divine guidance in secret and in public.
Seek refuge in the Hashemite Prophet and in loving him,
And in love of Abu Hafs and love of Abu Bakr,
And of the remaining radiant Companions from the house of Hashim,
Possessors of might, eminence, glory, and pride.
O [Lord], let love for all of them benefit us,
And let them intercede for the sins we have committed.
