The enchantress of eyelids, sweet of glance,
Her pillows bring healing from pain.
The curves of her eyebrows bent toward me,
And from the corner of her eye shot arrows into my heart.
What wonder in her saliva, so pure,
Lawful, yet to me forbidden.
If it were wine, where is the color of wine?
And its delight? Yet I have tasted neither.
She has a dwelling in the quarter of my heart,
Protected there since I made it her sanctuary.
The course of her love is the course of my life,
Her love mingled with my spirit, my flesh and my blood.
She said, how long will you be content to live miserably,
And be satisfied to be sound and whole?
Travel through God's lands, and seek riches,
Gallop if you wish, or if you wish, walk blamefully.
I said to her, He who created the world
Will provide me sustenance, graciously.
It does not harm me to be master of virtue
Though proud souls may think me haughty and high.
If I lack sufficient money and goods,
Yet preserve my soul from humiliation and shame,
And have not debased my mind in the service of knowledge,
To serve, not for service's sake, but to serve the deserving.
