ونرجس متغاض

كأنما الحزن مضه

And narcissus partly closed

As if sorrow left it

يرنو بطرف كحيل

كمن يحاول غمضه

Batting its kohl-lined eye

Like one trying to shut it

وسوسن ان تشمه

فكالوذائل بضه

Inhale the lily's scent

Like braids undone, unplaited

أو السن الدر صيغت

او الطلا المبيضه

Carnations like pearls forged

Or silver well burnished

والاقحوان نجوم

ليست ترى منقضه

Colocynths like stars

You won't see them fall

كانت ختاماً عليه

منه كمائم غضه

Capping them off

Like sealed scrolls

فحاول الجو رفضا

بفضة الطل فضه

The breeze tried to shake them free

With the moon's silver flash

لم يضحك الروض الا

دموعه المرفضه

The garden smiled only

With tears it had rejected

مازال يولي فيولي

من كل ود محضه

Still it sways to and fro

From every loving friend

حتى اذا الورد حيى

وعارض المسك عرضه

Until roses came alive

And musk spread its aroma

ابدى غلائل حمرا

ازارها منفضه

It showed crimson braids

Their belts unfastened

كأنما المزن جيش

يحاول الافق عرضه

As if the clouds were an army

Spreading across the horizon

كأنما البرق فيه

على اجتدالك حضه

As if lightning in them

Urged by your return

كأنما الرعد قصفا

بكم يهدد ومضه

As if thunder a bombardment

Threatening in its rumble

كأنما الريح تبغي

لبعض شأوك نهضه

As if the wind wanted

To rouse some thorns for you

كأنما البحر عاف

اليك قد شد غرضه

As if the sea surged up

To meet you in yearning

ومد بالنهر كفا

لكي تعجل قرضه

And the river stretched out its palm

To hasten your taking
