Stay at home; do not leave the house, or you will regret it.

Stay at home; do not leave the house and grow troubled.

Stay at home, poor soul; you will prosper and gain.

Stay at home, and reflect on what you have sent ahead—

Your sins, and what you are about to face:

Grave matters from which even a child would grow old.

Fear God and thank Him for the blessings He has bestowed.

Seize your lifetime, deluded one, before it is cut short.

Beware, beware your tongue; restrain it—keep it tightly closed.

From it comes evil; I think no one is safe from it,

Unless he is a messenger—or else utterly mute.

Be silent, be silent: if you desire salvation, do not speak.

It is just as the honored Prophet said:

Nothing but it casts created beings into Hell.

And the hadith: if you believe in God and the Greatest Day—

Then be silent, or speak the better word. Enough—understand, understand.

Indeed, part of a young man’s good Islam is leaving what does not—

Concern him; as for what concerns you, seek it and hold fast.

Leave people alone, and beware of them as you would beware of poison.

Do not go to them, unless it be your maternal or paternal uncle—

For maintaining kinship and visiting—or when you are there to learn

Knowledge from them. Seek it, and be as though unable to speak.

Keep to hunger if you desire salvation and triumph; then

Know that this has come down to us in the revered hadith:

The son of Adam has filled no vessel more evil or unwholesome

Than the filling of the belly; know what this saying tells you—know it.

Satiety even from lawful food is the root of evil and blame.

This is so when it is lawful—what then of the forbidden?

Stay awake if you are engaged in good; otherwise sleep, sleep.

Know that ignorance rules the present age.

Good in it is scarce indeed, while evil is abundant.

Piety has grown scarce in it, and discernment has nearly vanished.

Lord, we ask You to cover us, mend us, and show us mercy.

Forgive our burdens, O God, and the offense of everyone who has sinned.

And end our lives beautifully when their end arrives.

Make Paradise our dwelling, and shield us from Hell.

And close this speech: may God bless Ahmad and grant him peace—

As long as a star journeys, or a cameleer chants, and the darkness grows black.
