إذا شئت السلام فالزم الدار

وكف النطق مع سمع وأبصار

If you want peace, stay home,

Stop talking, hearing, and seeing.

ولا تسأل على ماالناس فيه

ولا تكشف ولا تبحث عن أخبار

Don’t ask what people are up to,

Don’t uncover or search out news.

عسى تسلم عسى تنجو وتحفظ

عسى تكفي عسى تحمي من أشرار

Maybe you’ll be safe and saved,

Maybe you’ll be spared and protected from evil.

فلا خير في النجوى مع الناس

سوى أمر بمعروف أو إنكار

No good comes from whispering to people,

Except enjoining right and forbidding wrong.

وما أجمل ما أحسن شخصا

شغل بالبرقى سر وإظهار

How beautiful is one who occupies himself

Privately and openly with devotion.

وكن حلسا لبيتك امتثالا

لأمر المصطفى في جملة أخبار

Be content in your home following

The command of the Chosen One in all reports.

وخذ لك من علوم الدين حظا

يقيك الاثم والآفات والنار

Take from the religious sciences a portion

That will protect you from sins, harms, and Hellfire.

به تعرف فروضك والمحرم

به تبصر أسرارا وأنوار

With it you will know your obligations and prohibitions,

With it you will see secrets and lights.

به كل السر وروكل خير

به تحفظ من آفات الأغيار

With it is all good and every grace,

With it you are protected from the harms of strangers.

به تعطي المطالب والمواهب

به تكتب في ديوان الأبرار

With it you give requests and gifts,

With it you will be written among the righteous.

به ترفع همومك مع عمومك

ولا يبقى عليك أحزان وأكدار

With it you relieve all your worries and sorrows,

No grief or regrets will remain.

وذكر الله لازمة وواظب

عليه في عشيات وأبكار

Remembering God is an obligation—persist

Upon it morning and night.

ففيه النور والخيرات أجمع

جليس الله من ديدنه أذكار

In it is all light and bounty,

God’s companion is one whose custom is remembrance.

به النفحات والجذبات تأتي

من الله مع الرحمات مدرارا

By it whispers and attractions come

From God with abundant mercy.

به غرس الجنان فكن حريصا

على غرس بها من كل الأشجار

By it the gardens are planted—so be eager

To plant them with all kinds of trees.

فاغرس في حياتك قبل موتك

لتجني منها بعد الموت أثمار

So plant in your life before your death

To reap from it fruits after death:

قطوفا دانيات دائمات

منعم ما ترى الأكل شيء سار

Pickings, gifts, lasting pleasures

Delightful—you will see nothing but joy.

مخلد لا ترى بؤسا بعمر

طويل ليس يشبه كل الأعمار

Eternal, you will see no misery,

A long life like no other lifetimes.

وإن شئت العلوم بكل فن

كتاب الله رتله بتكرار

If you want knowledge in every art,

Recite the Book of God repeating it.

ففيه الشرح للصدر ففيه

الهدى فيه الشفا من كل شيء ضار

In it is expansion for the breast. In it

Is guidance. In it is healing from all harm.

الا يا رب أرشدنا وسدد

ووفقنا لملة خير مختار

Except—O Lord—guide us and make firm

And help us to the way of the Chosen Best.

على هدي النبي نسير جمعا

ونمشي في ورود بل واصدار

Upon the guidance of the Prophet we walk together

And tread the meadows and plains.

فإن الله ذوفضل عظيم

فكم أعطى بلا حد ومقدار

For God is of tremendous grace

And how much He gives without limit or measure.

فلا تقنط ولا تأمن وكن بين ذين

الخصلتين طريق الأخيار

So do not despair or feel secure, but be

Between these two traits the path of the virtuous.

وسلمنا إلهي من شرور

بها يمشي كثير الحلم محتار

And deliver us, my God, from evils

By which the forbearing wander perplexed.

فسلمنا بمحض الفضل منها

كما عودتنا يا خير غفار

So deliver us purely by Your grace from them

As is Your custom, O Best of Forgivers.

فكم شر كفيت وكم كروب

زويت وما يقي من تلك آثار

How much evil have You prevented and how much anguish

Have You dispelled and nothing can protect from such traces.

فأرجو سواك لكشف ضرى

ولستب أخاف إلا النافع الضار

So I hope for none but You to remove harm

And I fear none but the Harmful, the Beneficial.

كفى علمك ولكن ما صبرنا

وأيضا في الدعا جملة أسرار

Your knowledge suffices, but we have no patience

And also in supplication are many secrets—

خطاب وافتقار والتعبد

لأمرك به بقرآن وأخبار

Appeal, neediness, and worship of

Your command through Quran and reports.

فياستار يا غفار استر

وأغفر كل عصياني والأوزار

O Coverer, O Forgiver, cover over

And forgive all my disobedience and burdens.

وسلمنا من المكروه في ذه

وفي الأخرى من الأهوال والنار

And deliver us from hated things in this life

And in the next from terrors and Hellfire.

وهب لي سيدي قلبا سليما

صحيحا طاهرا جهرا وإضمار

Grant me, my Master, a sound heart

Healthy, pure, open and secret.

فنمشي به صراطا مستيما

صراط الله في علن وإسرار

With it we walk a straight path—

The path of God openly and secretly.

وخلقا طيبا حسنا عظيما

به نحفظ من ضر واضرار

And excellent, beautiful, tremendous character

With which we protect from harm and injuries.

وحسن الخاتمة للكل منا

إذا تمت ليالينا والأعمار

And a good ending for us all

When our nights and lifespans are complete.

بها ترضى عن الكل جميعا

بها نوقي جميع الخزي والعار

With which You are pleased with all of us

With which we avoid all shame and disgrace.

بجاه المصطفى الهادي محمد

شفيع الخلق تقضي كل الأوطار

For the sake of the Guide Muhammad

Intercessor of creation, fulfilling all difficulties.

عليه صلاة ربي كل حين

وسلم ما تحرك غصن أشجار

Blessings of my Lord upon him always

And peace whenever a branch stirs.

تعم الآل والأصحاب جمعا

مهاجرهم وباديهم والأنصار

Encompassing his family and companions—

The emigrants, nomads, and supporters.

ولله الكريم أجل حمد

يكرر دائما في كل الأعصار

To God, the Generous, is due

Immense praise, repeating in all eras.

وختم القول خذ نصحا عجيبا

إذا شئت السلامة فالزم الدار

The words conclude—take wondrous advice:

If you want security, stay home.
