يا صاح فك الناس والزم الدار
ولا تعاديهم ودارهم دار
O friend, avoid people and stay home
Do not make enemies or invade their abode
ولا تخالطهم تنالك أكدار
ولا تحصل غير اثم وأوزار
Do not socialize, lest you face distress
And attain nothing but sin and darkness
ما تسمع الا غيبة أو نميمة
وكل كلمة فاحشة عظيمه
You hear only gossip and slander
Every word vulgar and offensive
فالبعد منهم يا فتى غنيمه
وتركهم جنه وقر بهم نار
Keeping away, my lad, is a gain
Abandoning them is paradise, being with them is hellfire
ما همهم غير القيل والقال
وذكر أشيامو بقه وأهوال
They care for nothing but rumors
And tales of horrors and terrors
ذي توحش الخاطر وتكسف البال
وكل من تلقاه قال أخبار
That sadden the heart and shame the mind
All who meet them share stories
فالاعتزال اليوم فرض لازم
إلا جلوسك عند شخص عالم
Seclusion today is an obligation
Except sitting with a scholar
لمجلس التعليم كن ملازم
مع التحفظ من شرور وأشرار
Attend lessons, but beware
Of evils and those who misguide
كذلك الجمعه مع الجماعات
فإن فيها للإله نفحات
Likewise join congregations
Where divine fragrance is found
ينالها من جالها بنيات
مع الأدب في ظاهره والإسرار
Attained by the pious and virtuous
With manners outward and inward
واعلم هداك الله أن أربع
خصال فيها الشرقد تجمع
Know, may God guide you, four traits
That embody evil, so listen:
قد قالها الحداد فانصت اسمع
واترك لها تدعى منيب صبار
Said Al-Haddad, pay heed,
Leave them, you who seek wisdom
أولهن الجهل لا تريده
ولا تجالس من هم عبيده
First: ignorance, reject it
Do not sit with its slaves
قرينة الشيطان هو مريده
قد خسر الأخرى وهذه الدار
The devil's confidant, his disciple
Loser of this life and the next
والثانية ضعف اليقين في الدين
فإن هذى بغية الشياطين
Second: weak faith
For it is the devils' goal
وسلم الكفار والملاعين
وهي التي تنشى الزلل والأضرار
Surrender of unbelievers and miscreants
It breeds slips and harm
والثالثة طول الأمل ونسيان
الموت ذي يسقاه كل إنسان
Third: prolonged hope, forgetting
Death that makes all drink
فيشتغل بالعاجله وبالفان
ويترك التقوى سبيل الأبرار
Distracted by the fleeting world
Neglecting piety, way of the righteous
حتى يجيه الموت وهو لاهى
تارك فرائض مرتكب مناهي
Until death suddenly comes
While heedless, neglecting duties, transgressing bans
قاسي وناسي غافل وساهي
وإن وعظته جاب جملة أعذار
Cruel, forgetful, unaware, complacent
Even admonished, he makes excuses
أعذارذى توجب له الملامه
وليس هي تنجيه في القيامه
Excuses that invite blame
Not saving him on Judgement Day
فياله حسره وياندامه
لا تنقضي أو تحتصي بمقدار
Oh what sorrow and regret!
Endless, immeasurable
والرابعه أكل الشبه وأموال
حرام سحت كيف حال ذي الحال
Fourth: consuming dubious money
Ill-gotten wealth - consider one who does:
من أين يزكو له صلاح أعمال
أو يجتني قلبه حكم وأسرار
How can his deeds be made wholesome?
How can his heart gain wisdom and mysteries?
واعلم أخي أن الزمان قد خان
والخير ولي وأهله والأعوان
Know, my brother, times have betrayed
Virtue, its people and allies
وصار ذو الفطنه وحيد حيران
ودار في الغفلة كمثل من دار
The prudent became lonely and confused
While the heedless roamed as they pleased
فافزع إلى المولى وتب واقلع
ولا تعدى ساير ومسرع
So flee to the Master, repent, desist
Do not follow the heedless and hasty
إليه في كل الأمور ترجع
شاكر وصابر للقضا والأقدار
To Him refer all matters
Thankful and patient of fate and destiny
واذكر الهك في جميع الأوقات
وكل أنفاسك وكل حالات
Remember your God at all times
Every breath and state
إن شيت تظفر منه بالكرامات
فاجعل جميع العمر كله أذكار
If you wish, you will attain miracles
Make your life entirely remembrance
الذكر يجلي كل قلب صادي
الذكر قوت القلب والفؤاد
Remembrance illuminates every heart
Remembrance strengthens heart and soul
الذكر ديدن كل ذي رشاد
الذكر كم وردت بفضله أخبار
Remembrance is way of every wise one
Remembrance - how many virtues told of it!
الذكر غرس لك في الجنان
الذكر قوت القلب والجنان
Remembrance plants you in gardens
Remembrance strengthens heart and soul
الذكر يأتي لك بالأمان
الذكر يقضي لك جميع الأوطار
Remembrance brings you safety
Remembrance fulfills every goal
الله يذكر كل ذاكر الله
ومن نسي ذكر الإله ينساه
God remembers the rememberer
And forgets he who forgets the Divine
لقد خسر في دينه ودنياه
وسوف يندم عند ختم الأعمار
He failed in religion and life
Will regret when his time ends
واحذر من الدنيا عدوة الله
تلهى الفتى عن ربه وعقباه
Beware the world, God's enemy
Distracting youth from Lord and fate
وتشغله عن دينه وتقواه
وعن سبيل الصالحين الأخيار
Engrossing him from religion and piety
From the path of righteous and virtuous
هذا ولا تصفو له بحال
وتوعده بالكذب والمحال
Do not incline to it whatsoever
Nor promise it falsely and impossibly
وتمنحه في الحال بالنكال
فلا تكن يا ذالها بمختار
Then grant it immediately
Do not be, my lad, of its chosen
واسلك سبيل المتقين الأسياد
أهل العبادة والتقى والأوراد
Walk the path of the pious masters
The worshipping, pious, generous
الخائفين الخاشعين الأجواد
أهل الصفا وأهل الوفا والأنوار
The fearful, humbled, purest souls
People of sincerity and light
في ذكر سيرتهم نزول رحمه
وتنتعش للخير كل همه
Speaking of them brings mercy
Every ambition for good revived
وتندفع كم قسوة وظلمه
وتنقشع عنا غيوم الأغيار
Many harshness and injustice dispelled
Clouds of adversity scatter
عسى بهم ربي يفك وسرى
فلا أرى بأسا ولا أرى ضار
May my Lord, through them, relieve my grief
Let me see no distress or harm
عسى عسى نفحة تص من الغيب
تزيل عنا ما بنا من العيب
Perhaps a fragrance will blow from the unseen
Removing our flaws and doubts
وتنتفي كل الشكوك والريب
ففضل ربي واسع ومدرار
I hope in God, the oft-forgiving
My assumption of my Lord is good and plenty
إني لأرجوالله خير غافر
والظن في ربي حسن ووافر
Though I am disobedient and inadequate
I never despair of the generous forgiver
هذا وإن كنت مسىء وقاصر
قلت آيس كريم غفار
O Lord, O gracious and generous
Conclude with sincere repentance and faith
يا رب يا معطي جواد منان
اختم بتوبة صادقة وإيمان
Forgiveness, mercy and approval
To enter Paradise and not see Hell
ومغفرة ورحمة ورضوان
فندخل الجنة ولا نرى النار
Then blessings everlasting
As long as stars twinkle and doves coo
ثم الصلاة والسلام ما لاح
نجم وما غرد حمام أوناح
Upon the guiding Prophet
His family, companions - the purest souls
على النبي الهادي لكل اصلاح
والآل والأصحاب نعم الأطهار
