جزى الله المصائب كل خير

أفادتنا علوما نافعات

May God reward afflictions with all good

They have taught us beneficial knowledge

علوما لم نجدها في كتاب

ولم أظفر بها عند الثقات

Knowledge we did not find in a book

And I did not attain with the trusted ones

من التزهيد في أهل ومال

وفي وطن وفي هذى الحياة

Of detachment from family, wealth

And homeland and from this life

فكم من منحة في ضمن بلوى

وكم خبى بطن الشتات

So how much blessing lies within trials

And how much is hidden within dispersal

وكم نيطت سعادات بفقر

وكم جلب الغنى من مهلكات

And how much happiness is tied to poverty

And how much wealth brings perdition

وكم أمن طوى في جوف خوف

وتحصيل تحصل بالفوات

And how much safety lies in the midst of fear

And attainment comes through loss

وكم عز لقى في بطن ذل

وكم أتت المصائب بالهبات

And how much honor lies in the belly of disgrace

And how afflictions bring gifts

عسى أن تكرهوا شيئا وفيه

لكم خير كما في البينات

Hope that you may hate a thing and in it

Is good for you, as in the clear verses

وللراضي بها أجر عظيم

وبشر صابرا بالصلوات

And for the content therein is great reward

And give glad tidings to the patient with prayers

له من ربه وهدى ورحمة

كما يتلى بنص المحكمات

For him from his Lord and guidance and mercy

As recited in the text of the clear verses

ولا تسخط قضا الله فترمي

بسخط الله رأس الطاميات

And do not resent the decree of God, lest you

Throw yourself into God's wrath, O misguided one

وأمر الله يمضي شئت أم لا

ولست تحوز غير الحسرات

And God's command proceeds whether you wish or not

And you possess nothing but regrets

وذم وافر وذهاب أجر

فلا يرضى بذا غير الشقاة

And abundant blame and loss of reward

So none accept this but the wretched

وقد حفت جنان الله ربى

بمكروه وترك الشهوات

And God's gardens have been surrounded

With hated things and leaving desires

ونار الله قد حفت بكل

فنون الشهوات الملهيات

And God's fire has been surrounded by every

Kind of tempting, distracting desires

فالأكدار في ذي الدار إلا

لنتركها ونعمل للملمات

So sorrows in this abode except

To leave them and work for requitals

وفي الفاقات والحاجات سر

عظيم رافع للدرجات

And in deprivation and needs lies a great secret

Raising the ranks

هي الأعياد تحمل حامليها

لصدق الالتجا في الدعوات

They are festivals carrying their bearers

To sincerity of appeal in supplications

فكم طى المصايب من خيور

حسان عاليات غاليات

So how many virtues has tribulation concealed

Beautiful, precious ones

تقود بنا إلى رب كريم

وتنهى عن أمور فانيات

That lead us to the Generous Lord

And forbid transient matters

وتورثنا خضوعا وانكسارا

وتركا للأمور المنكرات

And make us inherit submission and humility

And leaving condemned affairs

فسلم للاله أخي وفوض

وكن عبد التحظى بالصلات

So surrender to God my brother and delegate

And be a servant who attains prayers

فإن العبد ليس له اختبار

وليس له التحكم في الشآة

For the servant has no choice

And no control over provisions

وليس له من التدبير شيء

وليس يريد غير الواردات

And he has no part in planning

And wants nothing but what comes

وهمته التعبد والعباده

بتحقيق العبودة بالثبات

And his ambition is worship and servitude

By perfecting servitude steadfastly

ألا إن الاله بنا رحيم

إلينا محسن في كل آت

Behold, God is Merciful to us

Beneficent to us in everything that comes

لمن يدري لمن يعلم ويفهم

لمن يفقه حل المشكلات

For one who knows, who understands and comprehends

Who understands how to solve problems

لمن بالله يحسن في ظنون

وذي التفويض عند المعضلات

For one who thinks well of God in conjectures

And delegates at quandaries

يشاهد خيره في كل فعل

ويرضى ما خلا بالسيآت

He sees good in every deed

And accepts what befalls with rectitude

يشمر في رضا الله تعالى

بفعل الباقيات الصالحات

He rolls up his sleeves to please God most High

By doing righteous lasting deeds

ألا إن القلوب قست وماتت

فلم تخشع وتصغ للعظات

Behold, hearts have hardened and died

So they neither humble nor heed admonitions

سواء قلت أم لا قلت شيأ

كشبه السائمات الراتفعات

Whether I speak or not say anything

Like those set in their ways, haughty

أما إن التذكر والتلافي

لباقي اللحظات الذاهبات

But to remember and make amends

For the remaining fleeting moments

دراك دراك قبل حلول حال

عيى في وصفه أهل اللغات

Quickly, quickly before a state arrives

The eloquent have failed to describe

ألا إن السلامة من يردها

يجدها في الخمول وفي السكات

Behold, one who wants safety

Finds it in reticence and silence

وترك الناس والعادات بتا

وترك المحدثات الترهات

And leaving people and passing fancies

And leaving novelties and frivolities

ألاهل سامع فطن حليم

يجيب مسرعاق بل البيات

Behold, is there a listening, discerning, wise one

Who responds quickly without procrastination

يفكر في الأمور وما وراها

ويسعى في الخلاص وفي النجاة

Who deliberates on matters and what's behind them

And strives for salvation and deliverance

إلهي يا عظيم الفضل يامن

إليه مفزعي في النائبات

My God, O Tremendous in Bounty, O You unto Whom

I flee at tribulations

سألتك تقض حاجاتي جميعا

وتعطيني جميع الطلبات

I asked You to fulfill all my needs

And grant me all requests

وتختم لي بخير عند موتي

وتكفيني جميع المفزعات

And seal me with good at my death

And protect me from all places of refuge

وعفوا سيدي فضلا ومنا

وغفرا للذنوب الموبقات

And pardon, my Master, please and bounty

And forgive heinous sins

فمالي غير فضلك من مغيث

إليه أتوب عند الموحلات

For I have none but Your bounty to help me

To You I turn in dire straits

وكن لي سيدي في كل حال

وقدني للأمور المنجيات

And be for me, my Master, in every state

And guide me to redeeming affairs

بجاه المصطفى خير البرايا

محمد المشفع في العصاة

For the sake of al-Mustafa, best of creation

Muhammad the intercessor for sinners

رسول الله ذي البركات من قد

أتى بالبينات المعجزات

The Messenger of God, possessor of blessing from whom

Clear signs and miracles have come

عليه الله صلى ثم سلم

وبارك عد كل الكلمات

May God bless and salute him

And bless all his words

كذاك الآل والأصحاب نرجو

بذكرهم نزول الرحمات

The same upon his Family and Companions, we hope

That mentioning them brings down mercy

ولله الكريم أجل حمد

على النعم العظام السابغات

And to God most Generous is the fullest praise

For tremendous overwhelming favors

فلا نحصي على الله ثناء

تعالى عن صفات المحدثات

So we cannot adequately thank God
