1. مستوقفي بين ذل الصد والملل

    لاحظ لي منك إلا لذة الأمل

    Standing between humiliation, boredom and gloom

    I see in you nothing but the pleasure of hope

  2. أرضي بطيفك بل أرضى بذكرك أن

    يتدلى وذاكري مقرونين في الغزل

    Please me with your apparition, rather, please me with your memory

    That it hangs down while my mind and it are coupled in passion

  3. لا ترحلن فما أبقيت من جلدي

    ما أستطيع به توديع مرتحل

    Do not leave, for I have no patience left

    To bid farewell to one departing

  4. ولا من الغمض ما أقري الخيال به

    ولا من الدمع ما أبكي على طلل

    Nor do I have imagination that can entertain

    Nor tears to cry over ruins

  5. نعم لي العزمة الغراء إن وجدت

    لم تحتفل بوجيف الخيل والإبل

    Yes I have the strong determination, if I found

    You did not take notice of the neighing of horses and camels

  6. تحوي مرادي على رغم العواذل من

    رب الأكاليل لا من ربه الكلل

    My purpose contains despite the blamers

    From the Lord of wreaths, not from the Lord of skullcaps

  7. قد زدت يا ليلة التوديع في حزني

    ولم تزل يا صباح الوصل في جذل

    O night of farewell, you have increased my sorrow

    And O morning of union, you have not stopped exciting

  8. وأنت يا جسداً لج القضاء به

    حتى برته يدُ الأوجاع والعلل

    And you, O body which destiny has worn out

    Until the hand of pains and diseases stripped it

  9. كيف احتملت الضنا في الظاعنين ضحى

    وكنت للشوق فيهم غير محتمل

    How could I endure the meagerness from the critics at dawn

    While to passion in them I was intolerant

  10. عجبت أن يحل السقم في بدن

    لو شاء جاز الردى سراً من الأجل

    I wondered how illness befell a body

    Had it wished, secretly from fate, it would have avoided calamity

  11. لم يبق منه سوى قلب يقلبه

    في ملطب العز بين البيض والأسل

    Nothing remained of it but a heart which

    Tosses it in the alternative of glory and misfortune

  12. مقسم قلبه في كل مرحلةٍ

    شوقاً إلى العز لا شوقاً إلى الغزل

    Its heart swearing in every stage

    Yearning for glory, not yearning for passion

  13. نفسي الفداء إذا ما الروع صبحني

    للأعين الخزر لا للأعين النجل

    My soul for redemption, when slumber overcomes me

    For the red eyes, not for the sleepy eyes

  14. لله جسمي فما أبقى حشاشته

    على الحوادث والأسقام والوجل

    To God is my body, so what remains of its accessories

    Against incidents, diseases and terrors

  15. يعدو سقامي على مثل الخيل ضنى

    ويقرع الخطب مني صفحة الجبل

    My sickness speeds like scared horses

    And hits my forehead like a mountain clash

  16. ولا يرى في فراشي عائدي شبحاً

    ويحمل الدرع مسلوباً عن البطل

    And it does not see in my bed a specter returning

    Bearing the coat of mail taken off the hero

  17. أنا المقيم وأشعاري على سفرٍ

    كادت تؤلف أعلاماً على السبل

    I am the resident, and my poems are on a journey

    About to compile flags on the roads

  18. سارت شوارد أوصاف الوزير بها

    سير الجنوب بصوب العارض الهطل

    The attributes of the minister wandered with them

    The journey of the south towards the rainy north

  19. يروي القريض ولما يسم قائله

    فيشهد المجد أن المدح فيه ولي

    Al-Quraishi recites them but when he names their sayer

    Glory testifies that the praise in them is true

  20. إذا سهرت لتحبير المديح له

    راسلت طبعي ومن إحسانه رسلي

    If I stay up late to draft praise for him

    I address my nature, and from his kindness are my messengers

  21. ما بعده لشذور القول مدخرٌ

    في مقلة الريم أعلى بغية الكحل

    Beyond him, the twinkles of words are stored

    In the pupil of the lance, atop the kohl container

  22. وما به حاجةٌ في المدح تنظمه

    الشمس تكبر عن حلي وعن حللِ

    And no need in praise does he have verses compose for him

    The sun is too grand for ornaments and skullcaps

  23. لكنه ملكُ هامت عزائمه

    بالجود فهو يروم البذل بالحيل

    But he is a king whose resolves

    With generosity he aspires to give cunningly

  24. ما قال لا قط مذ حلت تمائمه

    بخلاً به فوجدنا الجود في البخل

    He never said no, since his amulets

    Descended, so we found generosity in stinginess

  25. أولى الملوك بتدبير الممالك من

    يغني ويقني ولم يورث ولم يسلِ

    The foremost kings to govern kingdoms

    Are those who enrich and judge and did not inherit or were stingy

  26. ومن يبيت من الأيام في خجلٍ

    إن لم يبت والليالي منه في وجل

    And those whom days do not embarrass

    If they did not spend nights while days because of them are fearful

  27. ومن يطبقُ وجه الأرض عسكره

    يوم القراع ويلقى القرن في الفضل

    And those whose armies cover the face of the earth

    The day of battle, and meet the spear with superiority

  28. ومن يقود الأسود السود بالوعل

    ومن يصيد البزاة الشهب بالحجل

    And those who lead the black, black with resolve

    And those who hunt the falling stars with determination

  29. ومن يهم فلا يغزو سوى ملكٍ

    ولا يفرق غير الملك في النقل

    And those who never invade but a kingdom

    And none distributes captives but the supreme king

  30. يا راحلاً عنه إن البحر معترضٌ

    فما ورودك ظمآناً على وشل

    O you leaving him, the sea is an obstacle

    So do not come to it thirsty at vegetation

  31. لا تترك السيف مشحوذاً مضاربه

    وتطلب النصر عند الجفن والخلل

    Do not leave the sword sharp but sheathed

    And seek victory in the eyelid and wink

  32. قد وقر الدهر بالتدبير هيبته

    وأرجف الأرض بالغارات والغيل

    Time has secured his prestige with management

    And the land quaked because of raids and looting

  33. تجري الجياد من القتلى على جبلٍ

    ومن دمائهم يرحضن في وحل

    The steeds flow from the dead on a mountain

    And from their blood on a marsh they race

  34. ومن جماجمهم يصعدن في نشزٍ

    ومن ذوائبهم يقمصن في شكل

    And from their skulls they climb in bundles

    And from their tresses they jump in shapes

  35. تحملت صهوةٌ أخرى شواكلها

    من طول ما حملت سبياً على الكفل

    Another mare undertook carrying his belongings

    From the length she carried captives on the shoulder

  36. قومٌ إذا ابتدروا يوم الوغى فرقاً

    تكاد تعثر أخرهم على الأول

    A people, when on the day of battle they separate squads

    Their last almost stumbles over their first

  37. قومٌ أعفاء عن غير العدو فلو

    غزون بالبحر لم يعلقن بالبلل

    A generous people towards other than the enemy, so had

    They fought in the sea, they would not have dripped wet

  38. إن التحكم في الدنيا بأجمعها

    لمفرد الرأي أمرٌ ليس بالجلل

    Verily taking control over the whole world

    For the singular opinion is no little feat

  39. يا من دعته ملوك الأرض راعيها

    حاشا لما أنت راعيه من الخلل

    O you whom the kings of earth have invited as their shepherd

    Far from you, as their shepherd, are shortcomings

  40. إن الملوك على أيامنا مقلٌ

    فاخلق برأيك أجفاناً على المقل

    Kings in our time are scarce

    So with your opinion, make eyelids over the scarce
