حجبت وما حجبت عن الصباح

وليلُ الصّبِّ ممطول البراح

The dawn has not been obscured from me,

And the night of anguish has been prolonged.

وبات السقم يكمن في عظامي

كمون الموت في حدِّ الصفاح

Illness lurks within my bones

Like the lurking of death at the blade's edge.

كسوت الحمد ذا عرضٍ مصونٍ

يمتَّعُ في حمى مالٍ مباح

I have clothed praise with protected honor,

Taking pleasure in honest, lawful wealth.

مزوحُ اللفظ مجذوعَ العطايا

جموحُ العزم مجنونَ السماح

Playful words with denied gifts -

Resolute will of a mind insane.

إذا اشتجرت على الملك العوالي

هززت أصمَّ موشَّى الجناح

When I contend for lofty kingship,

I shake the deaf, quilled wings.

يُريق على الظُّبا ريق المنايا

ويكحل بالردى مقل الرماح

He pours the spittle of death upon hyenas

And lines the spearheads with destruction.
