    What eyes were those that witnessed

    ruin like the ruin of my men!

    Ah, many a man will weep for me tomorrow

    amid calamities—and many a woman too.

    How many they left behind on the Day of the Well,

    on the morning of that calamity—

    each one like rain in the lean years,

    when the stars lay fallen.

    فاليوم حق حذاريه

    I had dreaded what I now behold;

    today my dread has proved true.

    فأنا الغداة مواميه

    I had dreaded what I now behold;

    this morning I stand bereft.

    Ah, many a woman will say tomorrow,

    “Alas for Mu‘awiya’s mother!”
