How shall I welcome Eid, my Lord

While the night of sorrow and grief intensifies?

I see Eid around me, not as I knew it before

Nor as what it used to be, full of hope.

I see it like a faded sword, lost in confusion and fear

Dragging its steps in bewilderment and dread.

Shall I meet it with hopes that weep in sadness?

Shall I meet it with homelessness, hunger and distress?

Shall I meet it crouching in a dreadful cave

Telling the fates a wolf's tale?

Telling the story of a nation

That collapsed from the heights, brokenhearted.

I see it and tears flow in grief

Remembering the dreams of torment and love.

Shall I meet it while friends have left me

And wandered away yearning for the road?

Where are our nights that filled the world

    With hopes and sweet springs?

Where are our songs that murmured with agony

Echoed around me by my dear companions?

I look around and see the dreadful cave looming

Tormenting me though I've done no wrong.

Around me are young orphans, whenever they walk

Their garments shake my heart with their pain.

Shall I meet it while my son is over there, and my daughter

Burning with raging vengeance in the dust?

And my wife whom I entrusted with all my affection

Who almost emerges today from the world of the unseen

Calling for fierce vengeance for the banner

For liberation, for glory, for the leap!

    For another fearless round, shouting

To the free, the horses and the spears!

Shall I meet it while the free in every land

Wander lost, displaced, schemed against and plundered?

They strove and set the world aflame with pride and dignity

And revolted against the torturer, the shackles and the cross.

They had, at the peak of glory, a valiant charge

And a noble throne over the meteors.

Oh what a pity! How changed today is their state!

They've become tales of gossip and lies.

What shall I do, direct me my Lord,

For I am stuck in dire straits.
