لعمري لقد جاورت في حي وائل

ومن وائل جاورت فى حي تلب

For my life, I have dwelled among the tribe of Wā’il

And from Wā’il I dwelled among the tribe of Talb

فأصبحت فى حي الأراقم لم يقل

من القوم يا حار بن ظالم اذهب

So I came to dwell among the tribe of Arāqim, none said

“O fiery son of Zālim, go away”

وقد كان ظني إذ عقلت إليكم

بني عدس ظني بأصحاب يثرب

And I had thought, when I came to understand you

O clan of ‘Ads, I thought you were like the people of Yathrib

غداة أتاهم تبع في جنوده

فلم يسلموا المرءين من حي يحصب

The morning Tubba’ came against them with his armies

They did not spare the two men from the tribe of Yaḥṣub

فإن تك في عليا هوازن شوكة

تخاف ففيكم حد ناب ومخلب

If you are a thornbush among the ‘Āliyah Hawāzin

You would fear, for among you are fangs and talons

وإن يمنع المرء الزراري جاره

فأعجب بها من حاجب ثم أعجب

And if a brave man prevents his neighbor

I am astonished by it, then more astonished
